Citizens of Oxford
(1509-1583) These selections from the Oxford city records were printed in 1880 under the direction of the Town Clerk. Much of the material comes from the council minutes: 24 common councillors were elected out of the citizens at large each 30 September. Apart from the general administration of the city, a large number of cases involve people brought before the Council for using improper language, or other misbehaviour. There is an almost unbroken series of hanasters, or admissions to freedom of the city, listing the names of those who by purchase, birth or apprenticeship were admitted to the guild merchant.CARO. Lord Willoughby in the Netherlands
(1580-1601) Mrs S. C. Lomas of the Historical Manuscripts Commission prepared this calendar of the manuscripts of the Earl of Ancaster preserved at Grimsthorpe, published in 1907. The records covered are from 1550 to 1737, but the bulk of this volume is given over to an edition of the correspondence of Peregrine lord Willoughby, who was appointed governor of Bergen-op-Zoom in 1586, and spent the next ten years commanding English and Dutch forces against those of Spain. There are also a few pages (449 to 452) dealing with a scattering of ancient deeds (from c.1160 to 1547); some items from inventories (452-459, c.1522 to after 1742) and household accounts (459-482, 1560-1661) which attracted Mrs Lomas's attention; and notes from a muster roll of Baberg hundred, Suffolk, of about 1522, from which some names are given in the text.CARO. England and Venice
(1643-1647) The Master of the Rolls directed the compilation of translations of archives from northern Italy relating to English affairs. This volume, edited by Allen B. Hinds and published in 1926, is largely based on transcripts in the Public Record Office in London of major sources from the Venetian archives, in particular the Dispacci, Inghilterra. Most of this volume consists of the letters of Secretary Agostini from London, the Advices of London forwarded from Paris, and the Esposizioni Principi; and as such contain descriptions of unfolding political events in Britain as seen by Italian diplomats. But there were also Englishmen actively trading with Venice and its sphere of influence in the eastern Mediterranean: Venice was struggling with the Turks for possession of Candia (Crete), and English merchants, mercenaries and ships were involved on both sides. There is even the report of a raid by Barbary pirates on the Cornish coast in which 200 women were carried off for slaves.CARO. Cost: £4.00. | Sample scan, click to enlarge
