Darien Company: Edinburgh Subscription List (1696) The Company of Scotland Trading to Africa and the Indies was established by Act of Parliament, a general subscription list being opened at Edinburgh from 26 February to 1 August 1696, and a separate one at Glasgow from 5 March to 22 April 1696. These lists were published in 1849 by the Bannatyne Club as an appendix to a volume called The Darien Papers. The lists give date, full name, sometimes an indication of address, and the amount of the subscription, in pounds Scots. CLELLAND. Cost: £6.00.	Sample scan, click to enlarge
Apprentices registered at Edinburgh (1717-1719) Apprenticeship indentures and clerks' articles were subject to a 6d or 12d per pound stamp duty: the registers of the payments usually give the master's trade, address, and occupation, and the apprentice's father's name and address, as well as details of the date and length of the apprenticeship. There are central registers for collections of the stamp duty in London, as well as returns from collectors in the provinces. There was a single collection for the whole of Scotland, made in Edinburgh. The sums collected are recorded in Scottish money, with conversion to sterling for transfer to London. A Scottish pund was worth 20 English pence. Because of the delay before some collectors made their returns, this register includes indentures and articles from as early as 1716. Captains of merchantmen at Jamaica (1785) The Daily Universal Register of London carried detailed lists of shipping news from ports around the world - arrivals, departures, ships in port, ships spoken to in passage - mostly, but not entirely, relating to British merchantmen. Sailors on board H. M. S. Leander (1796-1798) His Majesty's ship the Leander took part in the destruction of the French fleet in Aboukir Bay at the mouth of the Nile ('the Battle of the Nile') on the evening of the 1st and morning of the 2nd August 1798. This is the muster book for 1 June to 18 August 1798: being a continuation book in a series covering wages and victualling from June 1796, it also includes the names of some men who had died, deserted or been discharged from the ship from then to June 1798. Of the ship's complement of 343, this index covers the sailors, volunteers, and boys, as well as the supernumeraries: but not the marines, or the French prisoners taken after the battle. There are central registers for collections of the stamp duty in London, as well as returns from collectors in the provinces. These collectors generally received duty just from their own county, but sometimes from further afield. The indentures themselves can date from a year or two earlier than this return. (The sample entry shown on this scan is taken from a Bristol return. Officers of the Port Glasgow Volunteers (1820) Regular notices of promotions and appointments within the British army and local militias, and these were published in the Edinburgh Gazette. Full names of these officers are given, as well as the surnames of those whose places they filled because of promotion, resignation, death, dismissal or exchange. January to December 1820. CLELLAND. Irish Clergy and Gentlemen Discountenancing Vice (1822) The Association Incorporated for Discountenancing Vice and Promoting the Knowledge and Practice of the Christian Religion had an extensive membership in Ireland, of which this list was published as the 13th appendix to a Sermon preached before the members and their president, the Lord Lieutenant, in St Peter's church by Charles R. Elrington, D. D., his chaplain. The list gives each member's full name, surname first, with the year of admission to the society. This index also covers the fourteenth appendix, listing the members' subscriptions received in 1821, but some for previous years' arrears as far back as 1817, and whether paid in diocesan committees or in Dublin.
