Long-Lost Relatives: Soldiers' & Sailors' Inquiries (1900)
Each issue of Lloyd's Weekly News, of London, contained a column devoted to searches for Long-Lost Relatives. The inquiries were arranged in three groups: Home Inquiries (i. e., from correspondents in the United Kingdom); Colonial and Foreign Inquiries (from abroad); and Soldiers' and Sailors' Inquiries. Results from all these were grouped together as 'Answers to Inquiries'. Each column was headed: 'Correspondents MUST give full addresses and the DATES OF THE INQUIRIES to which they refer. We cannot search back numbers, nor print inquiries for "missing husbands." These columns are not intended for inquiries in respect to claimants for money, and no agents, at home or abroad, have any connection with Lloyd's.'

National ArchivesOutstanding soldiers of the Royal Scots Fusiliers (1881-1901)
Each year the best soldiers of the regiment were chosen for long service and good conduct medals. This register gives rank, name, regimental number, and date of recommendation. (The sample scan is from the East Surrey regiment). The register is essentially a register of recommendations, annotated with details of the issue of the medals. Where no gratuity accompanied the medal, the entry is marked 'W. G.' (without gratuity); where, for one reason or another, the medal was not issued, the entry is marked 'N. S.' (not sanctioned) and struck through. The regiment was based on the 21st Regimental District - Ayr. The 1st battalion returned from Bombay in 1881, and in 1885 was based at Aldershot. It was sent to Ireland in 1886; to Scotland in 1891; and back to England in 1893, returning to Aldershot. In 1896 the 1st battalion was dispatched to India, where it took part in the North West Frontier campaign. The 2nd battalion embarked for Natal 22 February 1879, took part in the Zulu war ("South Africa, 1879"), and in 1882 was sent on to India. The 2nd battalion was moved in 1884 to Burma, and in the Burmese Expedition of 1886 to 1887 added "Burma, 1885-1887" to the regimental honours. Returning to India, the battalion joined in the Hazara Expedition of 1888, and returned to England in 1896. The 2nd battalion was sent to South Africa in 1899, gaining the distinctions "South Africa, 1899-1902" and "Relief of Ladysmith".

University of Ireland Members of Convocation (1940)
The University of Ireland was established by royal charter in 1908, with three constituent colleges - University College, Dublin; University College, Cork; and University College, Galway. The university calendar for 1940 includes this complete list of Members of Convocation. It is similar to the general list of graduates of the university, but not exactly the same, for it includes academic staff of the university not necessarily graduates of the same, and not all graduates registered for membership of convocation. The list gives full names (surname first), degree and year of graduation, and, importantly, full address as in 1940 - information not given in the general list. Where the current full address was not known, the last known address was given, the entry being in italics.

Next are the qualifications; the italic abbreviations in parentheses following the qualifications indicate the medical school at which they were gained. Then there is a list of posts and honours within the profession, starting with those then current; previous posts are preceded by the word 'late'.
