Eminent Lancashire Men of Commerce (1903) The Contemporary Biography in 'Lancashire at the Opening of the Twentieth Century' was edited by William Thomas Pike. After opening with the most eminent men in the county, there are twelve sections, dealing with Nobility, Gentry and Magistrates; Clergy; Volunteers; Medical Men; the Legal Profession; Art, Music, Literary and Scholastic; Commercial; Dental; Architects, Engineers and Surveyors; Accountants, Auctioneers, Estate Agents, Insurance, &c.; Veterinary Surgeons; and an Obituary. Each biography usually (but not invariably) has a photograph; full name (surname first, in bold; christian name(s) in capitals) and address; birth place and date; father's name (and sometimes details); a short biography; whether married, with wife's name and her father's name and address. Owners of Country Houses in Lancashire (1917) The Horticultural Directory and Year Book was published for 57 years by the proprietors of the Journal of Horticulture, but for 1917 it was acquired by the Gardeners' Chronicle, and a complete revision was undertaken. 'In order to ensure the accuracy of the entries, enquiries were sent to every one of the many thousand persons whose names appeared in the lists. Nor did the work cease there, for in cases where no reply was received, a second enquiry, and in some instances even a third, was sent out. Inasmuch as the War has called many gardeners from their normal avocations, it was not possible to obtain information with respect to all the changes which occurred during the year, and particularly during the closing months. It became necessary, therefore, either to go to press with a certain number of unverified entries or to omit them altogether. After careful consideration, the latter course was adopted, and every unverified entry has been omitted.' Pages 75 to 187 of the work are occupied by 'A County Directory of the Principal Gardens in Great Britain and Ireland, including Name of Proprietor, Gardener, and Post Town.' Barristers (1918) The Law List for 1918 includes this 'List of Counsel, Special Pleaders, and Conveyancers at the Bar'. Each name is given in full, surname first; then the name of the Inn of Court as an abbreviation (G., Gray's Inn; I., Inner Temple; L., Lincoln's Inn; M., Middle Temple; and D. C. for Doctors' Commons) and date at which called to the bar. Barristers in practice are usually furnished with an address, and there are some abbreviated references to judicial awards and appointments. Members of Oxford University: Men (1931) The Oxford University Calendar for 1931 includes this list of all living members of the university, i. e. not only undergraduates and members of staff, but also all surviving graduates from earlier generations. The names are arranged alphabetically by surname, then by college in order of foundation. Surnames are given, initials, highest degree, name of college, and then the year of graduating the first degree. For undergraduates only name and college is given. Scientific Poultry Breeders (1932) The Scientific Poultry Breeders Association was by far the largest poultry society in Great Britain, with 16,109 members for the year 1930-1931. Past and present students of Clare College, Cambridge (1952) The College Clerk at Clare College issued this list of 'all those still living who have been admitted and have come into residence in Clare down to and including the admissions of the year 1951'. Naval Officers (1957) The Navy List for 1957, corrected to 18 January 1957, includes this main catalogue of 'Officers on the Active List of the Royal Navy and the Royal Marines and Retired and Emergency Officers Serving'. The first column gives surname and initials. The second column is rank, with a profusion of abbreviations, most of which are self-evident, often qualified by a specialisation, in brackets. The third column is for specialisations not demonstrated in rank.
