Among the Huntingdonshire possessions of Ramsey abbey was the manor of Gidding. In the Augmentation Office Court Rolls in the Public Record Office, a roll of five rotulets (Portf. 34, No. 46) includes a record of the proceedings at Gidding view of frankpledge 28 November 1290. These were transcribed by F. W. Maitland, extending the Latin but retaining the spelling of the proper names, and printed with a facing English translation in 1889. In many cases the surnames were also Englished, but we have reindexed the text on the original forms alone.

| Aliens in London (1571)
'The Reporte of the Searche of all the Straungers wythin London and Southwerk and the Liberties therof, made the xth daye of November, 1571'. The search found a total of 4,631 aliens living in the city, the great majority (3,643) being Dutch, 657 Frenchmen, 233 Italians &c. Arranged by parish and ward the report lists each householder by full name, where born, whether a denizen, (often) additional details, and how many aliens were in the household, and religion. This index includes also persons mentioned incidentally, such as employers. SP 12/82. Where there is a pair of scans for a single entry, the first gives the heading for the ward or parish.

| Massachusetts Criminals, Litigants, Lawyers and Jurors
(1673-1692)
The only surviving complete volume of the records of the courts held by the Governor and Assistants of the Colony of the Massachusetts Bay is for the period 1673 to 1692. It was transcribed by John Noble, and published by order of the Board of Aldermen of the City of Boston, New England, as County Commissioners of the County of Suffolk, Massachusetts. Under English law overseas colonies were generally deemed to fall under the jurisdiction of the Admiralty, and were subject to English law varied by local circumstances. These Courts of Assistants therefore also function as Courts of Admiralty; the courts had jurisiction over criminal cases and also in civil disputes between parties. In practice, many of the names that occur in the record are just those of the members of the grand jury and the lesser juries (appointed from among the adult male householders of the colony) before whom the cases were tried.HEWEN. | Wandsworth Burials
(1787)
The ancient parish of Wandsworth in Surrey comprised the single township of Wandsworth, including the hamlets of Garratt, Half Farthing and Summers Town. It lay in the archdeaconry of Surrey of the diocese of Winchester: unfortunately, few bishop's transcripts of Surrey parish registers survive earlier than 1800. Although the original parish registers of Wandsworth doubtless commenced in 1538, the volume(s) before 1603 had been lost by the 19th century. In 1889 a careful transcript by John Traviss Squire of the first three surviving registers was printed, and we have now indexed it year by year. From 1760 onwards the burial registers contain date of burial, and full name; for the burial of children, the parents' names are only occasionally stated, just the word 'inf.' for infant; for the burial of wives, the husband's name; ages are given for adults. Extra details such as date or cause of death, address or occupation are almost never given. The burial registers are considerably more bulky than the baptism registers, because the burying ground was used by Dissenters, who formed a large part of the population. These include a French Protestant congregation that worshipped in a church (the registers of which do not survive) in a courtyard immediately opposite the parish church. | Voters in the Western Division of Norfolk, for the parish of Methwold

Under the Reform Act of 1832, the County of Norfolk was allotted four Members of Parliament, being two Knights of the Shire for the Eastern Division and two for the Western. The Western Division included the hundreds of Brothercross, Clackclose, Freebridge Lynn, Freebridge Marshland, Gallow, North Greenhoe, South Greenhow, Grimshoe, Guiltcross, Holt, Launditch, Mitford, Shropham, Smithdon and Wayland. Polling in 1837 took place at Swaffham, Downham, Fakenham, Lynn Regis, Thetford and East Dereham. The franchise was available to freeholders worth 40s a year or over; copyholders and long leaseholders of £10 or more; short leaseholders and tenants of £50 or more: but limited to adult males. Voting took place on 1 and 2 August 1837. This poll book lists the voters for each parish, with the votes cast. Each voter had two votes: the votes are indicated in the columns F. (Sir William Henry Browne Folkes, 2838); A. (Sir Jacob Astley, 2713); B. (William Bagge, 3178); and C. (William Lyde Wiggett Chute, 2877). The voters were not necessarily resident in the parish, but derived their franchise from the land there; so some of the names have addresses outside the parish, not a few living in different counties. Not everyone voted, but everyone with a vote was listed in the poll book: persons who qualified for voting in two parishes (but nevertheless had just the one vote per person) are noted as such.HEWEN. (1870-1875)
Each year just a handful of outstanding soldiers of the regiment were chosen for good conduct medals and gratuities: these are listed here. There were two lists, one for men recommended for the Good Conduct Medal without a gratuity, and one for gratuities - £5 to a private, £10 to a corporal, and £15 to a serjeant. Both lists are indexed here, and each gives rank, name, regimental number, date of recommendation and date of issue. (The sample scan is from the 32nd foot). In 1873 the 1st battalion was sent from Ireland to the Channel Islands, and 1874 to England.
