National ArchivesApprentices registered at Stroud and Gloucester (1717-1719)
Apprenticeship indentures and clerks' articles were subject to a 6d or 12d per pound stamp duty: the registers of the payments usually give the master's trade, address, and occupation, and the apprentice's father's name and address, as well as details of the date and length of the apprenticeship. There are central registers for collections of the stamp duty in London, as well as returns from collectors in the provinces. These collectors generally received duty just from their own county, but sometimes from further afield. Because of the delay before some collectors made their returns, this register includes indentures and articles from as early as 1716. (The sample entry shown on this scan is taken from a Norfolk return)

National ArchivesOutstanding soldiers of the 78th regiment of Foot (1860-1870)
The 78th (Highland) Regiment of Foot (or Ross-shire Buffs) returned from India in 1859: the regimental depot was at Fort George. In 1865 the regiment was sent to Gibraltar, then on to Nova Scotia. Each year just a handful of outstanding soldiers of the regiment were chosen for good conduct medals and gratuities: these are listed here. There were two lists, one for men recommended for the Good Conduct Medal without a gratuity, and one for gratuities - £5 to a private, £10 to a corporal, and £15 to a serjeant. Both lists are indexed here, and each gives rank, name, regimental number, date of recommendation and date of issue. (The sample scan is from the 105th foot)

Men-at-the-Bar (1885)
Joseph Foster's Hand-List of Men-at-the-Bar gives a paragraph biography of men who had been called to the bar and were alive in 1885. After the full name (surname first, in capitals) there is a short statement of occupation or practice; a student at which inn of court; when called to the bar; father's name and then address; when born; if married, and, if so, wife's name (and her father's name) is often given. At the foot, in small type, is present residence, as of 1885.
