The poll of the freemen and electors of the City of Oxford was taken 17 November 1868, the candidates being the Rt Hon Edward Cardwell (C), William Vernon Harcourt esq., Q.C. (H), and James Parker Deane, Esq., Q.C., D.C.L. (D). This poll book, published by the Oxford Chronicle, lists all the voters alphabetically by parish or township, freemen's names being preceded by an asterisk. Postal addresses are given, including street numbers, and in the case of freemen occupation is usually given. Lodgers are listed separately at the end of each section. The areas covered are: All Saints, St Aldate, Binsey, St Clement, Cowley, St Ebbe, St Giles, Headington, North Hincksey, South Hincksey, Holywell, Iffley, St John, St Martin, St Mary Magdalen, St Mary the Virgin, St Michael, St Peter in the East, St Peter le Bailey, and St Thomas; and there is also a list of Out of Town (non-resident) freemen who voted.MAASZ. (1882)
The electoral register for the City of Oxford for 1882 lists persons entitled to vote at any election of a member or members to serve in parliament for the city or parliamentary borough of Oxford in that year. The names are arranged alphabetically in the parishes of Saint Aldate, Binsey, Saint Clement, Cowley, Saint Ebbe, Saint Giles, Headington, Holywell, Iffley, Saint John, Saint Martin, Saint Mary Magdalen, Saint Mary the Virgin, Saint Michael, North Hincksey and South Hincksey (in Berkshire), Saint Peter in the East, Saint Peter le Bailey, and Saint Thomas. In each case the voter number (out of a total of 6190) is given in the first column; then full name, surname first; place of abode; nature of qualification (such as house, &c.); and the name and situation of the qualifying property (often the same as the place of abode). At the end of each parish there is a list of freemen to be registered as parliamentary voters, with number, full name (surname first) and place of abode; and a list of lodgers registered as parliamentary voters, with number, full name (surname first), description of rooms occupied, and whether furnished or not, address, amount of rent paid, and name and address of landlord.MAASZ. (1916)
The Home Office issued monthly lists of aliens to whom Certificates of Naturalization or Readmission to British Nationality had been granted by the Secretary of State and whose oaths of allegiance had been registered in the Home Office. These notices, from January to December 1916, refer to naturalizations from December 1915 to November 1916. The lists give full name, surname first; country of origin; date of taking the oath of allegiance; place of residence; and occupation. An dagger indicates re-admission to British nationality.MAASZ. The London telephone directory lists subscribers alphabetically by surname and then by christian name or initials, with their postal address and telephone number. This is the L to Z directory issued in May 1939, but also contains some names from earlier in the alphabet, for instance in the separate section for midwives. The London telephone districts comprised not only the city centre, but also the very extensive suburbs in the Home Counties (Essex, Kent, Surrey and Middlesex).MAASZ. The Air Force List for 1957 contains gradation lists for all serving officers, corrected, generally, up to the appointments and promotions gazetted 2 April 1957. The officers are listed by branch, rank, and date of seniority; the names are given surname first, initials, decorations, and various sets of initials relating to their particular qualifications or expertise. A double-headed dagger before the name denotes a permanent direct commission; a dagger a national service commission; an asterisk some other non-permanent commission. The main abbreviations are: a. a., qualified at Army Long Gunnery Staff Course (A. A.); c. f. s., qualified flying instructor (with an asterisk if A1 category, without, A2); I, 1st class interpreter; i, 2nd class interpreter; i. d. c., completed a course at the Imperial Defence College; j. s. s. c., completed a course at the Joint Service Staff College; P, on probation; p. f. c., graduate of Pilot Flying College; p. s. a., graduate of R. A. F. Staff College; p. s. c., graduate of Military Staff College; q. s., R. A. F. graduate of the Military or Naval Staff College; Sp, medical or dental specialist; t. p., graduate of Empire Test Pilots' School; Z, qualified in A. I. S. Inspection Duties.
