(1259-1290)
Civil and criminal cases for most of Cheshire were handled by the county courts. Here we have the county court rolls for November 1259 to August 1260, December 1281 to September 1282, and December 1286 to September 1289. The city of Chester exercised its own jurisdiction, and here we have crown pleas and presentments from 1287 to 1297. The royal manor of Macclesfield in the east of the county had three independent jurisdictions - the hundred, forest and borough. Royal justices in eyre dealt with civil and criminal cases from the hundred and forest during their yearly visits, and here we have records from 1284 to 1290. Also covered by this index is an Inquest of Service in Time of War in Wales of 1288, listing knight's fees in the county. MATLEY. Cost: £4.00.  | Sample scan, click to enlarge

The Duchess of Norfolk allowed T. Walter Hall to examine the early archives of her Sheffield estates, and in 1926 he published a volume including abstracts (in translation) of the Sheffield manor court roll from October 1440 to September 1441. In this roll was also the Sheriff's tourn 18 April 1441 of the superior jurisdiction of Hallamshire, covering the sokes of Sheffield, Hannesworth, Bradfield, Southawe and Ecclesfield; and this is also printed. Hall found fragments of a Bradfield court roll of 1385; and devoted the latter half of his book to extracts from the Register of Copyholders' Surrenders, showing surrenders and admittances of copyhold tenants of the manor of Sheffield from 1403 to 1634; plus some miscellaneous deeds and documents relating to the manor and to Hallamshire. The Court of Great Leet for the manor of Stockport was held in November of the 4th year of king Edward IV. The court record, in Latin, lists the jury for the Great Inquest, and proceeds to give their findings on recent trespasses, largely petty matters such as breach of the assizes of bread, ale and meat, and overburdening the common pasture with too many animals. Amercements were assessed by the affeerers, whose names are also given. The jury elected the mayor, bailiff, tasters of ale, and overseers of bread and meat for the coming year.MATLEY. This Court Leet and Court Baron with View of Frankpledge for the barony of Stockport was held 2nd October in the 14th year of king Charles II. The court record, in a mixture of Latin and English, lists the jury, and proceeds to give their findings on recent trespasses, largely petty matters such as breach of the assizes of bread, ale and meat (presented by the alefounders and officers for flesh), and minor nuisances and infractions (presented by the scavengers, constables, burlymen and moor lookers). In addition there are notes as to the transfer of burgages; orders warning individuals to cease transgressions and pains set for non-compliance. The amercements were assessed by the affeerers, whose names are also given. All the officers for the coming year were chosen (pp. 32-34) - assessors, apprizers, market lookers, alefounders, burlymen, searchers and sealers of leather, scavengers, moor lookers, mayor, bailiff, constables, and affeerers.MATLEY.
