Suffolk Charters (1280-1289) A large accumulation of documents preserved in the Bodleian Library, Oxford, formerly constituted the antiquarian collections of Anthony a Wood, Roger Dodsworth, Ralph Thoresby, Thomas Martin of Palgrave, Thomas Tanner bishop of St Asaph, Dr Richard Rawlinson, Richard Furney archdeacon of Surrey, and Richard Gough. A calendar of these was prepared by William H. Turner and published in 1878 under the title 'Calendar of Charters and Rolls preserved in the Bodleian Library'. The word 'charters' is here used in a rather loose sense, including virtually any manuscript or copy of a manuscript, but the bulk of the contents consists of mediaeval deeds of conveyance. Turner's calendar deals with each briefly, naming the principal parties and the nature of the deed, but hardly ever lists the witnesses. Many of these charters were undated (dating of deeds did not become general until around 1350) or so damaged or defective ('mutilated' is Turner's usual description) as no longer to display a legible date. However, he contrived, from the style of the script and/or the nature of the contents, to estimate dates in such cases. The sample scan is from the start of the Bedfordshire list. OPTON. Cost: £4.00. Cheshire Court Rolls (1259-1290) Civil and criminal cases for most of Cheshire were handled by the county courts. Here we have the county court rolls for November 1259 to August 1260, December 1281 to September 1282, and December 1286 to September 1289. The city of Chester exercised its own jurisdiction, and here we have crown pleas and presentments from 1287 to 1297. The royal manor of Macclesfield in the east of the county had three independent jurisdictions - the hundred, forest and borough. Royal justices in eyre dealt with civil and criminal cases from the hundred and forest during their yearly visits, and here we have records from 1284 to 1290. Also covered by this index is an Inquest of Service in Time of War in Wales of 1288, listing knight's fees in the county. OPTON. Cost: £4.00.	Sample scan, click to enlarge
Clerks and Clergy in Worcestershire and southwest Warwickshire. (1268-1301) The register of bishop Godfrey Giffard of Worcester, containing general diocesan business, mostly relating to clergy, but with some parochial affairs and disputes with names of parishioners. The diocese of Worcester at this period was almost exactly coextensive with the county of Worcester (minus its western finger), plus southwest Warwickshire (including Warwick itself). Close Rolls (1302-1307) The close rolls of the 31st to 35th years of the reign of king Edward I, that is to the day of his death (7 July 1307), record the main artery of government administration in England, the orders sent out day by day to individual officers, especially sheriffs of shires: they are an exceptionally rich source for so early a period. In amongst this official material, the rolls were also used as a way of recording many acknowledgments of private debts and contracts between individuals. Most of the contents relate to England, but there are also entries concerning Wales, Scotland, Ireland and the English possessions in France. OPTON. Cost: £4.00.	Sample scan, click to enlarge
London, Essex and Hertfordshire clerks, clerics, monks and clergy (1361-1374) Ordinations to first tonsure, acolytes, subdeacons, deacons and priests, from the register of bishop Simon de Sudbury of London. London diocese covered Middlesex, Essex and part of Hertfordshire; the ordinations also attracted many persons from distant dioceses bearing letters dimissory from their ordinaries, and these are duly noted in the text. Many of these clerks would not go on to obtain benefices and remain celibate. The lists of subdeacons, deacons and priests state the clerks' respective titles, i. e., give the names of the person or religious house undertaking to support them. Monks and friars ('religious') are listed separately, and the lists of subdeacons, deacons and priests are also separated into beneficed and not beneficed (or 'not promoted'). Traders in Canterbury (1392-1592) No man or woman could trade in the city of Canterbury without having obtained 'freedom' of the city, unless they paid an annual fee to do so. Admissions of freemen were recorded on the Chamberlains' Accounts of the city, which were prepared annually from Lady Day (25 March) to Lady Day until 1752, and thereafter each set runs from 1 January to 31 December. The accounts for 1392 are incomplete, but thereafter until 1800 there is a complete series except for the years 1455 to 1457 and the year 1552-3. Joseph Meadows Cowper, Honorary Librarian to the Corporation, transcribed and privately printed in 1904 the lists of the Intrantes - those persons, not being free of the city, who paid the annual fine to trade - for the period 1392 to 1592. The names are arranged by ward (Burgate, Newyngate, Westgate, Worgate and Northgate, and give full name, (sometimes) occupation, and fee paid. OPTON. Cost: £4.00.	Sample scan, click to enlarge
England and Venice (1642-1643) The Master of the Rolls directed the compilation of translations of archives from northern Italy relating to English affairs. This volume, edited by Allen B. Hinds and published in 1925, is partly based on transcripts in the Public Record Office in London of major sources from the state archives housed in the Frari at Venice, and partly taken directly from the originals, in particular the Dispacci, Inghilterra. Much of this volume, covering March 1642 to July 1643, consists of the letters of Giovanni Giustinian the Venetian ambassador in England, and of Gerolamo Agostini, the Venetian secretary there; and as such contain descriptions of unfolding political events in Britain and northern Europe as seen by Italian diplomats. But there were also Englishmen actively trading with Venice and its sphere of influence in the eastern Mediterranean, and these too are mentioned from time to time. OPTON. Cost: £4.00. Hinds and published in 1926, is largely based on transcripts in the Public Record Office in London of major sources from the Venetian archives, in particular the Dispacci, Inghilterra. Most of this volume consists of the letters of Secretary Agostini from London, the Advices of London forwarded from Paris, and the Esposizioni Principi; and as such contain descriptions of unfolding political events in Britain as seen by Italian diplomats. But there were also Englishmen actively trading with Venice and its sphere of influence in the eastern Mediterranean: Venice was struggling with the Turks for possession of Candia (Crete), and English merchants, mercenaries and ships were involved on both sides. Testators and legatees in London (1358-1688) The Court of Husting of the city of London sat (usually on a Monday) each week: among its functions was the enrolment of deeds and wills relating to citizens of London. In their strictest technical sense the terms 'will' and 'devise' are appropriate to real estate, and the terms 'testament', 'bequest' and 'legacy' to personal estate, but this distinction is lost sight of in ordinary usage. This calendar of wills proved and enrolled in the Court of Husting was edited by Reginald R. Sharpe, records clerk in the office of the Town Clerk of the City of London, and printed by order of the corporation in 1890. The date of the court is given in italics, with the year in bold in the margin. The testator's name is given in capitals (surname first, in bold), and then a brief listing of substantial bequests, with the names of legatees, and then the date of making of the will, and reference. Gloucester Directory (1820) 'The Gloucestershire Directory, containing the Names & Residences of Professional Gentlemen, Merchants, Manufacturers, and Tradesmen, in Gloucester Cheltenham Cirencester Tewkesbury Stroud Wotton-under-Edge Dursley Tetbury Painswick &c. &c.
