Pleas at Westminster Michaelmas term, 5 & 6 Philip & Mary and 1 Elizabeth, 1558. The court dealt with civil cases: debt, detinue, slander, assault, theft, breach of covenant, formedon, novel disseisin, &c. Each case is marked in the margin with the name of the county to the sheriff of which the writs were issued. Most often, but not necessarily, this would be the county of residence of the defendant. This calendar of the original formulaic record in abbreviated Latin on parchment has been made by David Bethell, preserving all individual detail from each case. | Traders in Canterbury
(1392-1592)
No man or woman could trade in the city of Canterbury without having obtained 'freedom' of the city, unless they paid an annual fee to do so. Admissions of freemen were recorded on the Chamberlains' Accounts of the city, which were prepared annually from Lady Day (25 March) to Lady Day until 1752, and thereafter each set runs from 1 January to 31 December. The accounts for 1392 are incomplete, but thereafter until 1800 there is a complete series except for the years 1455 to 1457 and the year 1552-3. Joseph Meadows Cowper, Honorary Librarian to the Corporation, transcribed and privately printed in 1904 the lists of the Intrantes - those persons, not being free of the city, who paid the annual fine to trade - for the period 1392 to 1592. The names are arranged by ward (Burgate, Newyngate, Westgate, Worgate and Northgate, and give full name, (sometimes) occupation, and fee paid. PARAMORE. Cost: £4.00. | Sample scan, click to enlarge

| Armigerous families in Shropshire
(1623)
A heraldic visitation of Shropshire was taken in 1623 by Robert Tresswel, Somerset Herald, and Augustine Vincent, Rouge Croix Pursuivant of Arms, marshals and deputies to William Camden, Clarenceux King of Arms. At this visitation, county families claiming the right to bear coats of arms registered these together with their pedigrees, often stretching back through many generations. A copy of the visitation (Harleian MS 1396) was edited by George Grazebrook and John Paul Rylands, with additions from pedigrees of Shropshire gentry taken by the heralds in 1563 and 1584, and other sources, and published by the Harleian Society in 1889. Additions from Harleian MS 1241 are shown in italics; from Harleian MS 615 in italics within parentheses; and from a copy of the 1623 visitation in Shrewsbury School library, in italics within square brackets.PARAMORE. | Well-Affected Men of Kent
(1648)
After the capture of king Charles I by the forces of Parliament, this petition signed by over 1100 of 'the well affected in the county of Kent' was drawn up, calling on the Commons to prosecute his trial vigorously, and not to be satisfied with 'less than the blood of those persons, who have been the principall Authors' of the civil war; and also to transfer authority over all the militia in the country to 'his Excellency the Lord Fairfax'. Thomas Hearne the antiquary published a copy of the petition 'taken by no very skillfull scribe' in 1774, observing that such petitions were 'very diligently drawn up, not by the honest part, but by the very scum, of the Nation, signed generally by persons, in all respects, of an ordinary Reputation.' Charles Cox in 1889 published this transcript 'from some folio papers pinned together, pertaining to the Dean and Chapter of Lichfield, which are indorsed “Hope Easter Booke, pro annis, 1658, 1659, 1660 : Arthur Jeynson, George Armestrong.” The entries for the two last years are short and fragmentary, but a literal copy is given of the whole of the year 1658. The list is evidently a complete record of those who paid their accustomed ecclesiastical dues at Easter, according to custom, and hence may be looked upon as a full census of all the householders of this extensive parish'. Names of heads of household are given, with abbreviations such as ap. for beehive, vac. for cow, vit. for calf, describing the animals on which tithe was due; but also fil., mat. and pat. to show where the payment included dues on behalf of child, mother, or father. The amounts stated in the columns on the right are not, as usual, pounds, shillings and pence, but rather shillings, pence and halfpence. There are separate returns for the townships and hamlets of Abney and Grange; Aston; Bradwall; Brough and Shatton; Coplow Dale and Beriston; Great Hucklow; Greenlow; Haslebadge; High Lowe, Stooke and Padley; Hope; Little Hucklow; Neither Ashop; Offerton; Pindale End; Shalcrosse; Thornhill; Wardlow; Windemill House; and Woodland.PARAMORE.
