Patent Rolls: entries for Wiltshire
(1279-1280)
Calendars of the patent rolls of the reign of king Edward I are printed in the Calendars of State Papers: but these cover only a fraction of the material on the rolls. From 1881 to 1889 the reports of the Deputy Keeper of the Public Record Office also include calendars of other material from the rolls - about five times as many entries as in the State Papers - predominantly mandates to the royal justices to hold sessions of oyer and terminer to resolve cases arising locally; but also other general business.  Apprentices registered in Norfolk
(1728-1731)
Apprenticeship indentures and clerks' articles were subject to a 6d or 12d per pound stamp duty: the registers of the payments usually give the master's trade, address, and occupation, and the apprentice's father's name and address, as well as details of the date and length of the apprenticeship. There are central registers for collections of the stamp duty in London, as well as returns from collectors in the provinces. The English in Madras

Henry Dodwell, curator of the Madras Record Office, compiled a 'Calendar of the Madras Despatches', published in 1920, interweaving despatches in his archives from the India Office to and from their governors at Fort St David and Fort St George with similar material from the India Office archives in London. All manner of commercial, political, military and diplomatic affairs are touched upon: the people mentioned are mainly merchants, officials, clerks, soldiers, and officers of the naval squadrons patrolling the seas from England to India and on to the East Indies and China. William Smith's abstracts of bankruptcy certificates and dividends for England and Wales from December 1807 to 1810, referring to commissions taken out before December 1807. Each entry gives the year of the commission; the full name of the bankrupt, address, occupation, and the dates of dividends and certificate as appropriate. RENE. Each name is given in full, surname first; then the name of the Inn of Court as an abbreviation (G., Gray's Inn; I., Inner Temple; L., Lincoln's Inn; M., Middle Temple; and D. C. for Doctors' Commons) and date at which called to the bar. Barristers in practice are usually furnished with an address, and there are some abbreviated references to judicial awards and appointments. The Calendar of the Trinity College of Music, London, for the year 1929 includes lists of licentiates and associates including these musicians. Surnames and initials are given; but women are distinguished by having their (first) christian name stated. The college provided instruction to nearly 1000 students a year, with examinations of 66,000 candidates a year at 700 local centres throughout the world. RENE.
