Prerogative Court of Canterbury Wills: Gloucestershire: Testators (1658) William Brigg compiled abstracts of all the wills in Register "Wootton" of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury. The abstracts of those proved in 1658 were published by him in 1894. The court's main jurisdiction was central and southern England and Wales, as well as over sailors &c dying abroad. We have re-indexed the whole volume, county by county, for both testators and strays (legatees, witnesses and other persons mentioned in the abstracts). ROWLAN. Cost: £4.00. Sailors and marines awarded the Baltic Medal (1854-1857) During the Crimean War, a British and French fleet entered the Baltic, and captured Bomarsund harbour and one of the Aland Islands (now part of Finland). Bomarsund is the sound between the islands and the Swedish island of Vardo; and at the fine harbour on Bomarsund, dominating the entrance of the Gulf of Bothnia, and indirectly that of the Gulf of Finland, the Russians had constructed a northern naval base, and this was destroyed in the attack. The British fleet taking part in the Baltic expedition comprised Her Majesty's ships Aeolus, Ajax, Alban, Algiers, Amphion, Archer, Arrogant, Basilisk, Belleisle, Blenheim, Boscawen, Bulldog, Caesar, Calcutta, Centaur, Colossus, Conflict, Cornwallis, Cossack, Cressy, Cruizer, Cuckoo, Cumberland, Dauntless, Desperate, Dragon, Driver, Duke of Wellington, Edinburgh, Esk, Euryalus, Exmouth, Falcon, Firefly, Geyser, Gladiator, Gorgon, Hannibal, Harrier, Hastings, Hawke, Hecla, Hogue, Imperieuse, James Watt, Leopard, Lightning, Locust, Magicienne, Majestic, Merlin, Miranda, Monarch, Neptune, Nile, Odin, Orion, Otter, Pembroke, Penelope, Pigmy, Porcupine, Prince Regent, Princess Royal, Pylades, Resistance, Retribution, Rhadamanthus, Rosamond, Royal George, Royal William, Russell, St George, St Jean D'Acre, St Vincent, Sphinx, Stromboli, Tartar, Termagant, Tribune, Tyne, Valorous, Volage, Volcano, Vulture, Wrangler and Zephyr. This is the medal roll of the naval and marine claimants who qualified for the Baltic Medal for service in 1854 to 1855. The medals were dispatched in batches from early 1857, the first batch being numbered B A 1, the next B A 2, &c.; then follows the destination (a place or, more usually, a ship) and the date of dispatch. Soldiers of the 1st battalion, The Royal Sussex Regiment, fighting in Egypt (1882) The war medal roll for the Egyptian campaign of 1882 is annotated to show those men actually present at Tel-el-Kebir, and thereby also entitled to the Tel-el-Kebir clasp. In addition, there follows an almost duplicate roll of men entitled to the Bronze Star granted by the Khedive of Egypt in recognition of the campaign. The 1st battalion, The Royal Sussex Regiment, embarked for Barbadoes 15 October 1875; was transferred to Malta in 1879; to Cyprus in 1880; and thence to Egypt in 1882. After taking part in the 1882 campaign, the troops were moved south into the Soudan, where they fought in the battle of Abu Klea. This medal roll, compiled at Camp Abbasiyeh near Cairo in November 1882, refers only to the 1882 campaign. The troops returned to England 11 September 1885. ROWLAN. Cost: £8.00. Outstanding soldiers of the Royal Sussex Regiment (1881-1901) Each year the best soldiers of the regiment were chosen for long service and good conduct medals. This register gives rank, name, regimental number, and date of recommendation. (The sample scan is from the East Surrey regiment). The register is essentially a register of recommendations, annotated with details of the issue of the medals. Where no gratuity accompanied the medal, the entry is marked 'W. G.' (without gratuity); where, for one reason or another, the medal was not issued, the entry is marked 'N. S.' (not sanctioned) and struck through. The regiment was based on the 35th Regimental District - Chichester. The 1st battalion moved from Cyprus to Egypt in 1882, moving into the Soudan in 1884, and fighting at Abu Klea - adding "Egypt, 1882", "Nile, 1884-5" and "Abu Klea" to the regimental honours. The battalion returned to England in 1885, and was transferred to Ireland in 1891 (was at Fermoy in 1895) and back to England in 1896. The battalion was sent out to Malta in 1899, and on to South Africa in 1900, adding "South Africa, 1900-1902" to the colours. The 2nd battalion embarked for Malta in 1882, and went on to Egypt and India in 1885, where it was established at Dum Dum by 1895. It took part in the Hazara Expedition of 1888 and the North West Frontier Campaign 1897 to 1898. ROWLAN. Cost: £8.00.	Sample scan, click to enlarge
Unclaimed Naval Prize Money (1855-1902) Various prize moneys were awarded to officers and men who served on board her Majesty's ships. For one reason or another a substantial number of these prizes, from as little as a shilling or two to as much as many pounds, remained undistributed by 1902, when this comprehensive list of the unclaimed moneys was printed: it lists unclaimed shares of prize money, slave and pirate bounties, salvage awards, parliamentary grants, gratuities and other moneys distributed by the Admiralty 1855 to 1902, but which omits moneys for service on the China Station during the war of 1856 to 1880, and special gratuities for service in Egypt (1882), Soudan (1884) and Soudan and Nile Expedition (1884-1885), for which there are separate indexes. In each case the sailor's name is given first (surname, then christian name or initials); rank or rating; ship in which serving at time of capture or award; and the amount due. ROWLAN. Cost: £6.00.
