| England and Venice
(1642-1643)
The Master of the Rolls directed the compilation of translations of archives from northern Italy relating to English affairs. This volume, edited by Allen B. Hinds and published in 1925, is partly based on transcripts in the Public Record Office in London of major sources from the state archives housed in the Frari at Venice, and partly taken directly from the originals, in particular the Dispacci, Inghilterra. Much of this volume, covering March 1642 to July 1643, consists of the letters of Giovanni Giustinian the Venetian ambassador in England, and of Gerolamo Agostini, the Venetian secretary there; and as such contain descriptions of unfolding political events in Britain and northern Europe as seen by Italian diplomats. But there were also Englishmen actively trading with Venice and its sphere of influence in the eastern Mediterranean, and these too are mentioned from time to time.STRAHAN. The State Papers Domestic cover all manner of business relating to Britain, Ireland and the colonies, conducted in the office of the Secretary of State, as well as other miscellaneous records. 1 March 1702 to 31 May 1703. The calendar was prepared by Robert Pentland Mahaffy, with certain classes of document extracted and placed in separate appendices (called Tables): I, caveats; II, church and university appointments, &c.; III, commissions, warrants for commissions, notes of commissions and notes of warrants for commissions in the English army for 1702; IV, lord lieutenants and deputy lieutenants; V, Irish warrants; VI, weekly lists of ships of the Home Fleet with their stations and orders; VII, passes, notes of passes, post warrants and licences of absence; VIII, orders on petitions; IX, Scottish warrants and commissions; and X, miscellaneous royal warrants (to the Attorney or Solicitor General; in criminal cases; diplomatic; military warrants; miscellaneous warrants; secretary's warrants, allowance of bills, &c.; and notes of warrants for the appointment of almsmen). The source material in the Public Record Office that he drew on in making this compilation is referenced throughout, and is from the State Papers Domestic (and Military, Naval, Signet Office, Various, and Letter Books and Entry Books), State Papers Scotland (Correspondence, Letter Books and Warrants), State Papers Ireland (and King's Letter Books), and State Papers Channel Islands.

These abstracts of the Treasury minute books and corresponding warrants for this period covers a huge variety of topics involving all manner of receipts and expenditure, customs and revenue officials, civil servants, pensioners, petitioners and postmasters figuring particularly among the individuals named.

This collection of letters and papers is particularly interesting in that it includes a file of petitions and memorials to queen Anne from 1704 to 1708, and a similar file of petitions to Robert Harley in his post as Secretary of State during the same years. Apprenticeship indentures and clerks' articles were subject to a 6d or 12d per pound stamp duty: the registers of the payments usually give the master's trade, address, and occupation, and the apprentice's father's name and address, as well as details of the date and length of the apprenticeship. There are central registers for collections of the stamp duty in London, as well as returns from collectors in the provinces. There was a single collection for the whole of Scotland, made in Edinburgh. The sums collected are recorded in Scottish money, with conversion to sterling for transfer to London. Also includes Queen Anne's Civil List (royal expenditure) Lottery papers: payment of the royal servants had fallen two years in arrear: Parliament passed an Act allowing the queen to raise half a million pounds by pledging 32 years' future income: she did this by means of a lottery.
