Suffolk householders
(1674)
Hearth tax was raised by assessing each householder on the number of chimneys to the dwelling. This provided a simple way to make a rough judgment as to the value of the dwelling: paupers were issued exemption certificates, but they too were listed at the end of each return. The returns were made by township, grouped by hundred. A complete copy of the hearth tax return for each shire was sent to the Exchequer: this is the return for Suffolk for Lady Day (25 March) 1674 (E 179/257/14) as printed in 1905 as Suffolk Green Book no xi, vol. 13. The numbers given are the numbers of hearths: where two or more people are grouped together with one number, it may be assumed that they were heads of separate households sharing a single building with that number of chimneys.SUCKER.  Masters and Apprentices

Apprenticeship indentures and clerks' articles were subject to a 6d or 12d per pound stamp duty: the registers of the payments usually give the master's trade, address, and occupation, and the apprentice's father's name and address, as well as details of the date and length of the apprenticeship. 7 January to 31 December 1723.SUCKER. London, Salisbury, Exeter, Plymouth and Falmouth Railway Shareholders

The return of the railway subscription contracts deposited in the Private Bill Office lists the shareholders in the London, Salisbury, Exeter, Plymouth and Falmouth Railway, subscribers to shares amounting to £1,410,865 towards the £1,700,000 estimated expense of the project. Prisoners in County Durham

A total of £2272 11d was disbursed by the County Treasurer of Durham from 31 December 1844 to 25 August 1845 to attorneys conducting prosecutions in the county sessions and assizes. The accounts list date of payment; attorney's surname; full name of prisoner; when prosecuted; and cost. The abbreviations used are 1 S. for Epiphany Sessions; 2 S., Easter Sessions; 3 S., Midsummer Sessions; 4 S., Michaelmas Sessions; Spl. S., Special Sessions; Sp. A., Spring Assizes; S. Sailors and marines on board Her Majesty's ship Barracouta

The China Medal was awarded to soldiers and sailors involved in the various actions of the war against China, in which this ship was engaged from 1856 to 1860. The medals were either delivered on board or sent on in 1862: except that many of the men were no longer immediately traceable, and the remarks on the roll show that some medals were not sent on for several years, and some were never sent.SUCKER. London Telephone Subscribers
(1939)
The London telephone directory lists subscribers alphabetically by surname and then by christian name or initials, with their postal address and telephone number. This is the L to Z directory issued in May 1939, but also contains some names from earlier in the alphabet, for instance in the separate section for midwives. The London telephone districts comprised not only the city centre, but also the very extensive suburbs in the Home Counties (Essex, Kent, Surrey and Middlesex).SUCKER.
