Treasury Books (1693-1696) Records of the Treasury administration in Britain, America and the colonies, from January 1693 to March 1696. These also include records of the appointment and replacement of customs officers such as tide waiters and surveyors. The calendar was prepared by William A. Shaw for the Lords Commissioners of His Majesty's Treasury and published in 1935, from letters patent, privy seals, royal sign manuals and warrants, treasury warrants, commissions, orders, letters, memorials, reports and other entries, all not of the nature of Treasury Minutes. Apprentices and trainee clerks (1761) Apprenticeship indentures and clerks' articles were subject to a 6d or 12d per pound stamp duty (late payment of the 6d rate attracted double duty (D D) of 12d): the registers of the payments usually give the master's trade, address, and occupation, and the apprentice's name, as well as details of the date and length of the apprenticeship. 28 July to 31 December 1761. Sailors on board H. M. S. Audacious (1796-1798) His Majesty's ship the Audacious took part in the destruction of the French fleet in Aboukir Bay at the mouth of the Nile ('the Battle of the Nile') on the evening of the 1st and morning of the 2nd August 1798. This is the muster book for 1 July to 31 August 1798: being a continuation book in a series covering wages and victualling from August 1796, it also includes the names of some men who had died, deserted or been discharged from the ship from then to July 1798. Of the ship's complement of 590, this index covers the sailors, volunteers, and boys, as well as the supernumeraries: but not the marines, or the French prisoners taken after the battle. Hastings and Rawdon family correspondence (1724-1817) John Harley of the Historical Manuscripts Commission was invited by Reginald Rawdon Hastings to examine his family's extensive archives at the Manor House, Ashby de la Zouche, in Leicestershire. Harley produced a detailed calendar, of which this is the third volume, published in 1934, Hastings himself having since died, and Harley having been killed at Gallipoli, the work being completed by his colleague, Francis Bickley. This volume covers two categories of the records: correspondence of the Hastings and Rawdon family 1724 to 1815; and letters of Warren Hastings, of Daylesford House, Worcestershire, to general Charles Hastings, afterwards sir Charles Hastings, bart. Subscribers to Spiritual Recreations (1821) 'Spiritual Recreations in the Chamber of Affliction: or Pious Meditations in Verse; written during A protracted Illness of Thirteen Years' by Eliza (Garrington of Burnham in Essex), was published in London in 1821. The subscription list is mainly drawn from Essex and London: it indicates those (marked with an asterisk) who bought the superfine paper edition, and those who bought more than one copy. Deaths, Marriages, News and Promotions (1833) Death notices and obituaries, marriage and birth notices, civil and military promotions, clerical preferments and domestic occurrences, as reported in the Gentleman's Magazine. Classics students at Cambridge University (1836) Tripos lists or examination results for the year, arranged by class (First, Second and Third), and within each class in order of score in the examination (students getting exactly equal marks are bracketed together with the note 'AEq.'). Each student's surname and college is given: this list was printed in 1890, and was annotated with asterisks to show which students had subsequently become fellows of the university; and with footnotes showing those who became headmasters, &c., elsewhere. In each year two students were singled out for the Chancellor's Medals, and these are marked, (A) for senior, (B) for junior (or with a paragraph mark if adjudged of equal merit). At this period candidates for Honours in Classics were required to have obtained Honours in Mathematics: holders of Dr Smith's Mathematical Prizes, where they occur, are marked (1) for senior, and (2) for junior. These lists are particularly useful in identifying for an individual the fellow-students who will have attended lectures with him; and, where from the college, are likely to have been even more closely associated by having been under the same supervisor. The Greek letter alpha is affixed to the names of those students who had gained first class results in the Classical Tripos; beta to those entered in the second class; and gamma to those entered in the third class.
