The Curia Regis, king's court, of mediaeval England took cases from throughout the country, and its records are among the most important surviving from this early period. This transcript of the rolls for October to December 1194 and October 1198 to July 1199 were edited by sir Francis Palgrave for the Commissioners of the Public Records. | Inhabitants of Suffolk

The lay subsidy granted by Act of Parliament in 1523 was a tax on the laymen (as opposed to clergy), levied on householders, landowners, those possessing moveable goods worth £1 or more, and all workmen aged 16 or over earning £1 or more per annum. Real estate was taxed at a shilling in the pound; moveable goods worth £1 to £2 at fourpence a pound; £2 to £20 at sixpence a pound; and over £20 at a shilling in the pound. Wages were taxed at fourpence in the pound. Aliens were charged double; aliens not chargeable in the above categories had to pay a poll tax of eightpence. The records of the assessment for the county of Suffolk, mostly made in 1524, survive in 64 rolls in the National Archives. From 42 of these a compilation for the whole shire was printed in 1910 as Suffolk Green Book x. This includes a list of defaulters of 1526 and a subsidy roll of 1534 for Bury St Edmunds.TALLON. | Merchants and Manufacturers in Lancaster

William Tunnicliff's 'Topographical Survey of the Counties of Stafford, Chester, and Lancaster' included directories of the principal merchants and manufacturers in each county. For Lancashire, there are lists of traders in Bacup, Blackburn, Bolton, Burnley, Bury, Haslingden, Kirkham, Lancaster, Leigh, Liverpool, Manchester, Prescot, Preston, Rochdale, Rossendale, Ulverston and Wigan.

His Majesty's ship the Minotaur took part in the destruction of the French fleet in Aboukir Bay at the mouth of the Nile ('the Battle of the Nile') on the evening of the 1st and morning of the 2nd August 1798. This is the muster book for 1 August to 30 September 1798: being a continuation book in a series covering wages and victualling from September 1796, it also includes the names of some men who had died, deserted or been discharged from the ship from then to August 1798. Of the ship's complement of 640, this index covers the sailors, volunteers, and boys, as well as the supernumeraries and a group of pilots: but not the marines, or the French prisoners taken after the battle. This is the muster book for 1 July to 31 August 1798: French sailors picked up by the ship after the action were given two-thirds rations until they could be put ashore in Alexandria, and so were entered in these pages.TALLON.
