 Men of the 40th Regiment who fought in the New Zealand War
(1863-1870)
New Zealand War Medal roll for the 40th (2nd Somersetshire) Regiment of Foot: for service in the New Zealand campaign 1863 to 1866: the rolls were compiled following a general order in 1869 and the medals were distributed in 1870. The regiment, although called the 2nd Somersets, was based at Birr in Offaly. It embarked for New South Wales 14 July 1852, and was moved to New Zealand in 1860; the men returned to England in 1866, and thence back to Ireland in 1869.TOMNEY. Life Guards fighting in Egypt
(1882)
The war medal roll for the Egyptian campaign of 1882 is annotated to show those men actually present at Tel-el-Kebir, and thereby also entitled to the Tel-el-Kebir clasp. In addition, there follows an almost duplicate roll of men entitled to the Bronze Star granted by the Khedive of Egypt in recognition of the campaign. Outstanding soldiers of the 2nd Life Guards
(1881-1901)
Each year the best soldiers of the regiment were chosen for long service and good conduct medals. This register gives rank, name, regimental number, and date of recommendation. (The sample scan is from the East Surrey regiment). The register is essentially a register of recommendations, annotated with details of the issue of the medals. Where no gratuity accompanied the medal, the entry is marked 'W. G.' (without gratuity); where, for one reason or another, the medal was not issued, the entry is marked 'N. S.' (not sanctioned) and struck through. The regiment was based at Hyde Park. A detachment embarked for South Africa 29 November 1899 and returned 28 November 1900, having added "South Africa, 1899-1900", "Relief of Kimberley" and "Paardeberg" to the regimental honours.TOMNEY. London Telephone Subscribers

The London telephone directory lists subscribers alphabetically by surname and then by christian name or initials, with their postal address and telephone number. This is the L to Z directory issued in May 1939, but also contains some names from earlier in the alphabet, for instance in the separate section for midwives. The London telephone districts comprised not only the city centre, but also the very extensive suburbs in the Home Counties (Essex, Kent, Surrey and Middlesex).TOMNEY. Doctors in Scotland
(1948)
The Medical Directory was split into several sections. This section covered all medical practitioners resident in Scotland. Each year a schedule was sent to each doctor to be returned to the publishers, so as to keep the directory up to date. In the directory the doctor's name is given first, in bold, surname first, in capitals; then current address. Next are the qualifications; the italic abbreviations in parentheses following the qualifications indicate the medical school at which they were gained. Then there is a list of posts and honours within the profession, starting with those then current; previous posts are preceded by the word 'late'.
