Somerset testators and legatees (1501-1530) Somerset was almost coextensive with the diocese of Bath and Wells, which exercised local probate jurisdiction through its consistory and archdeaconry courts: but superior to the diocese was the province of Canterbury. Somerset testators who also had property outside the county had their wills proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury (PCC). The Somerset Record Society embarked on a program of publishing genealogical abstracts of the registered copy wills of Somerset testators in the PCC archives, and in 1903 (volume xvi) printed abstracts edited by the Reverend F. W. Weaver from the PCC registers 1501-1503 (register Blamyr), 1504-1506 (Holgrave), 1506-1508 (Adeane), 1508-1511 (Bennett), 1511-1514 (Fetiplace), 1514-1517 (Holder), 1517-1520 (Ayloffe), 1520-1522 (Maynwaryng), 1523-1525 (Bodfelde), 1525-1528 (Porch) and 1529-1530 (Jankyn). In addition, the volume includes abstracts of 48 Somerset copy wills in the registers of the Archbishops of Canterbury at Lambeth Palace Library from 1363 to 1491. The heading of each abstract gives the year of making the will (not the year of probate) and the testator's name in bold. Below that is the quire number and name of the PCC register. Date and details of probate are given at the foot of each abstract. Spellings of surnames are preserved as they appear in the registered copy wills, and may vary within a single document. TOWEY. Ticket-of-Leave Men (1853-1854) 1205 convicts (1157 men, 48 women) were granted tickets-of-leave giving them conditional pardon from 10 October 1853 to 11 July 1854. This return gives full name, where and when convicted, offence, sentence in years, date of licence and annuity. Nine of the men's licences were revoked for fresh offences. TOWEY. Cost: £6.00. Army commissariat and transport departments in Egypt (1882) The war medal roll for the Egyptian campaign of 1882 is annotated to show those men actually present at Tel-el-Kebir, and thereby also entitled to the Tel-el-Kebir clasp. In addition, there follows an almost duplicate roll of men entitled to the Bronze Star granted by the Khedive of Egypt in recognition of the campaign. TOWEY. Cost: £8.00. Outstanding soldiers of the King's Own (Scottish) Borderers (1881-1901) Each year the best soldiers of the regiment were chosen for long service and good conduct medals. This register gives rank, name, regimental number, and date of recommendation. (The sample scan is from the East Surrey regiment). The register is essentially a register of recommendations, annotated with details of the issue of the medals. Where no gratuity accompanied the medal, the entry is marked 'W. G.' (without gratuity); where, for one reason or another, the medal was not issued, the entry is marked 'N. S.' (not sanctioned) and struck through. The regiment was based on the 25th Regimental District - Berwick-on-Tweed. The 1st battalion embarked for India 13 October 1875, and was stationed at Meerut by 1885. It returned from India 6 February 1891, and in 1895 was at York. The 2nd battalion returned from Aden to England 27 March 1876: in 1879 it was moved to Ireland and by 1885 was stationed at Dublin. After a brief stay on Gibraltar in 1886, the battalion returned to England. 19 July 1888 the battalion embarked for Egypt, and from there was sent into the Soudan, fighting at Gemaizah; it was moved back into Egypt in 1889, and in 1890 set sail for India, where in took part in the Chitral Relief Force and the North West Frontier campaign, adding "Chitral" and "Tirah" to the colours. In 1895 the troops were at Rawul Pindee. The regiment took part in the South African war, gaining the distinctions "South Africa, 1900-1902" and "Paardeberg". TOWEY. Cost: £8.00. The regiment was based on the 17th Regimental District - Leicester. The 1st battalion returned from Bengal in 1882, and in 1885 was at Aldershot. It embarked for Bermuda 16 September 1888, was sent on to Halifax, Nova Scotia, and in 1893 to the West Indies. In 1895 the battalion was moved to South Africa, taking part in the Boer war of 1899 to 1902, fighting at Talana, Lombard's Kop, the defence of Ladysmith, Amesfoort, Ermelo, Geluk Farm, Bergendal and Badfontein; mentioned in despatches at Lyndenburg, operations in the Eastern Transvaal, Swaziland border, South Eastern Transvaal, and Slangapies ("South Africa, 1900-1902", "Defence of Ladysmith"). The 2nd battalion embarked for India 5 October 1876, and in 1885 was at Jubbulpore; it returned from India via Burmah (1888-1889) and Aden 1 December 1890, and in 1895 was at Aldershot. British artillerymen fighting in South Africa (1899-1902) The Queen Victoria's South Africa Medal was awarded (after her death, in the event) to all who had served honourably in the various campaigns in the Boer War. Returns were made from each unit, and consolidated into nominal roll, of which this is the one for the Royal Artillery. Confusingly, the ledgers used had originally been printed for a register of men transferred (or re-transferred after mobilization) to 1st Class Army Reserve. All the original column headings were therefore struck through, and the roll was prepared with this information: Date of Issue; Regimental Number; Rank; Name; Unit; Medal (a 1 indicating that a medal was awarded); [number of] Clasps; the reference to the source in the original returns, usually starting with AG for papers in the hands of the Adjutant-General, and 68/Art/ for the Royal Artillery records.
