Feet of Fines at Westminster: Hertfordshire Cases (1198) Pedes Finium - law suits, or pretended suits, putting on record the ownership of land. This transcript of the feet of fines of the '9th' year of the reign of king Richard I (3 September 1197 to 2 September 1198) was published by the Pipe Roll Society in 1898. The form of these proceedings is fairly standard: giving the date, the place of the hearing, and the names of the justices; the names of the plaintiffs (petentes) and defendants (tenentes) and a brief description of the land in question; the outcome of the case is a quitclaim by one party to the other, with a payment of a suitable sum. These cases were heard at Westminster: the original roll misdates the fines in the justices' eyre to the 9th rather than the 10th year of the reign, and this error may also relate to those at Westminster. In the printed copy the dates given in the margin may be 1197 where they should read 1198, or 1198 where they should read 1199, and may also be 1 or more days out. TRIKET. Cost: £4.00. Curia Regis Rolls (1194-1199) The Curia Regis, king's court, of mediaeval England took cases from throughout the country, and its records are among the most important surviving from this early period. This transcript of the rolls for October to December 1194 and October 1198 to July 1199 were edited by sir Francis Palgrave for the Commissioners of the Public Records. Charter Rolls (1050-1326) This abstract of the surviving charter rolls for 1300 to 1326, in the reigns of kings Edward I and II, was prepared by C. G. Crump and A. E. Stamp and published in 1908. The charter rolls not only recorded royal grants of lands, liberties and offices, but also enabled landowners to have their existing charters, their deeds of title, registered by the process of inspeximus and confirmation. After the Statute of Mortmain of 1279, this was of particular importance to religious houses, now greatly restricted in their ability to receive new donations of land, and anxious to prove title to their ancient property. Clerks and Clergy in Cornwall and Devon (1307-1326) The register of bishop Walter de Stapeldon of Exeter, containing general diocesan business, but in particular including ordination lists for monks and clergy. Inhabitants of Norwich (1307-1341) This calendar of the deeds enrolled from 1307 to 1341 was compiled for the corporation by Edith Crosse (MacKinnon), indexed by Walter Rye, and published by the Norfolk and Norwich Archaeological Society in 1915. They are set out chronologically, translated from the original Latin into English, giving the name and occupation of grantor and grantee, and naming the parish in which the property lay. Hope Easter Roll: Aston (1658) J. Charles Cox in 1889 published this transcript 'from some folio papers pinned together, pertaining to the Dean and Chapter of Lichfield, which are indorsed “Hope Easter Booke, pro annis, 1658, 1659, 1660 : Arthur Jeynson, George Armestrong.” The entries for the two last years are short and fragmentary, but a literal copy is given of the whole of the year 1658. The list is evidently a complete record of those who paid their accustomed ecclesiastical dues at Easter, according to custom, and hence may be looked upon as a full census of all the householders of this extensive parish'. Names of heads of household are given, with abbreviations such as ap. for beehive, vac. for cow, vit. for calf, describing the animals on which tithe was due; but also fil., mat. and pat. to show where the payment included dues on behalf of child, mother, or father. The amounts stated in the columns on the right are not, as usual, pounds, shillings and pence, but rather shillings, pence and halfpence. There are separate returns for the townships and hamlets of Abney and Grange; Aston; Bradwall; Brough and Shatton; Coplow Dale and Beriston; Great Hucklow; Greenlow; Haslebadge; High Lowe, Stooke and Padley; Hope; Little Hucklow; Neither Ashop; Offerton; Pindale End; Shalcrosse; Thornhill; Wardlow; Windemill House; and Woodland.
