Elizabeth College, Guernsey, was founded in 1563 and rechartered in 1825. Charles James Durand, Kentish Brock and Edward Charles Ozanne compiled this edition of the college register, published in 1898. The names are arranged by term of entering the school, with a sequential number, surname and christian names in bold: then place and date of birth, father's name or reference to a brother previously at the school; and year of leaving. | Long-stay Paupers in Workhouses: Thetford
(1861)
This comprehensive return by the Poor Law Board for England and Wales in July 1861 revealed that of the 67,800 paupers aged 16 or over, exclusive of vagrants, then in the Board's workhouses, 14,216 (6,569 men, 7,647 women) had been inmates for a continuous period of five years and upwards. The return lists all these long-stay inmates from each of the 626 workhouses that had been existence for five years and more, giving full name; the amount of time that each had been in the workhouse (years and months); the reason assigned why the pauper in each case was unable to sustain himself or herself; and whether or not the pauper had been brought up in a district or workhouse school (very few had). The commonest reasons given for this long stay in the workhouse were: old age and infirm (3,331); infirm (2,565); idiot (1,565); weak mind (1,026); imbecile (997); and illness (493). SYER. The annual list of Members, Associates and Apprentices of the Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain includes lists of London Members and Country Members (giving year of membership, number of certificate (if any), full name (surname first), and address: an asterisk indicates a Life Member); Associates admitted before 1 July 1842 (with full name, and where registered); Associates of the Society who had passed the Major Examination and were registered as Pharmaceutical Chemists, and Associates of the Society who had passed the Minor Examination and were registered as Assistants (year of admission, number of certificate, full name, and where registered); and Registered Apprentices (with date of registration, full name, residing with, and town).

Each year outstanding soldiers were chosen for good conduct medals and gratuities: these are listed here. There were two lists, one for men recommended for the Good Conduct Medal without a gratuity, and one for gratuities - £5 to a private, £10 to a corporal, and £15 to a serjeant. | Missing Next-of-Kin and Heirs-at-Law

The Unclaimed Money Registry and Next-of-Kin Advertisement Office of F. H. Dougal & Co., on the Strand in London, published a comprehensive 'Index to Advertisements for Next of Kin, Heirs at Law, Legatees, &c., &c., who have been Advertised for to Claim Money and Property in Great Britain and all Parts of the World; also Annuitants, Shareholders, Intestates, Testators, Missing Friends, Creditors or their Representatives, Claimants, Unclaimed and Reclaimed Dividends and Stock, Citations, Administrations, Rewards for Certificates, Wills, Advertisements, &c., Claims, Unclaimed Balances, Packages, Addresses, Parish Clerks' Notices, Foreign Intestates, &c., &c.' The original list was compiled about 1860, but from materials dating back even into the 18th century: most of the references belong to 1850 to 1880. For each entry only a name is given, sometimes with a placename added in brackets: there may be a reference number, but there is no key by which the original advertisement may be traced. The enquirer of the time had to remit £1 for a 'Full and Authentic Copy of the Original Advertisement, together with name and date of newspaper in which the same appeared'. SYER. Much of the journal is taken up with law reports, leading articles, &c., and the 'Solicitors' Department' contains several regular features of great interest. Lists of bankrupts, liquidations by arrangement, dividends and orders of discharge extracted from the London Gazette were published each week, and these have been indexed both for the principals and their solicitors.SYER. Volume 76 of The Law Times, 'The Journal of The Law and The Lawyers', a weekly publication, runs from 3 November 1883 to 26 April 1884. Much of the journal is taken up with law reports, leading articles, &c., and the 'Solicitors' Department' contains several regular features of great interest. The court lists enable us to follow the progress of cases scheduled to be heard in the high courts. Many of these cases never actually came to be heard, litigation ceasing whilst in preparation, or being resolved 'at the door of the court'. In almost all cases the parties are referred to by surname only. The very extensive lists of cases pending for trial or hearing in the Chancery Division are arranged by the justice appointed, and then sub-divided into categories such as 'Causes for Trial with Witnesses', 'Further Consideration', 'Demurrer', 'Non-witness Causes, Adjourned Summonses, and Special Cases.'SYER. In accordance with the Bankruptcy Act of 1883, notices received by the Board of Trade were gazetted in tabular form by the Inspector-General in Bankruptcy. At each stage the record gives the debtor's name, address (often including former addresses), description (i. e., occupation), the name of the court, and the sequential number of the matter in that court for the year. The tables of Receiving Orders additionally give Date of Order, Date of Petition and Date of Public Examination; notices of First Meeting give Date of Meeting, Hour and Place; Adjudications give Date of Order, Date of Petition, Name of Trustee (if appointed) and Address of Trustee; Notices of Intended Dividend give Last Day for Receiving Proofs, Name of Trustee, and Address; Notices of Dividends give Amount per Pound, When Payable, and Where Payable; Applications for Debtor's Discharge state the Day fixed for Hearing; and notices of Appointment of Trustees give the Trustee's Name, Address, and Date of Certificate of Appointment. Any one debtor would normally appear in a number of these tables as his or her case proceeded over the months. These are the notices gazetted in 1884.
