Apprenticeship indentures and clerks' articles were subject to a 6d or 12d per pound stamp duty: the registers of the payments usually give the master's trade, address, and occupation, and the apprentice's name, as well as details of the date and length of the apprenticeship. There are central registers for collections of the stamp duty in London, as well as returns from collectors in the provinces. These collectors generally received duty just from their own county, but sometimes from further afield. The indentures themselves can date from a year or two earlier than this return. (The sample entry shown on this scan is taken from a Bristol return. The provincial sections of the Universal British Directory include lists of gentry and traders from each town and the surrounding countryside, with names of local surgeons, lawyers, postmasters, carriers, &c. (the sample scan here is from the section for Bath). The directory started publication in 1791, but was not completed for some years, and the provincial lists, sent in by local agents, can date back as early as 1790 and as late as 1797.

Incidents from the Hertfordshire Sessions Books and Minute Books. These cover a wide range of criminal and civil business for the county: numerically, the most cases (362) concerned assaults and rioting, and larceny (378), but there is a large variety of other matter, as extensive as the jurisdiction of the courts. | Minor offenders in Leicestershire
(1834-1835)
Justices of the Peace throughout England and Wales had the power of summary conviction for certain minor offences, principally vagrancy, poaching, petty theft, bastardy and assault. The magistrates' clerks for each district were required by Parliament to make a return of the names, offences, terms of imprisonment, and whether a written record was made of the proceedings, for the period from Michaelmas (29 September) 1834 to Michaelmas 1835. The return vary in completeness from magistrate to magistrate - the fullest returns also give the offender's address, the amount of fine or length of imprisonment, and/or the names of the justices. The unclaimed dividend books of the Bank of England, containing names and descriptions of over 20,000 persons entitled to many millions of pounds accumulated in the bank unclaimed during the 18th and 19th centuries, mostly in consols and annuities, and transferred to the Commissioners for the Reduction of the National Debt.

Money & Property to the value of many Millions Sterling want Claimants'. The list of 4,128 names gives surname, christian name, and, occasionally, locality.
