Gun & Co. of 6 Prince of Wales' Road, London, in about 1870 published this fifth 'List of Next of Kin & Heirs, &c., who have been Advertised for in the English, Irish, Scotch, United States of America, Canadian, Australian, East and West Indian, and other Newspapers, since 1704. Money & Property to the value of many Millions Sterling want Claimants'. The list of 4,128 names gives surname, christian name, and, occasionally, locality. The New Zealand War Medal was awarded for service New Zealand campaign 1861 to 1866: this further progress report issued by the medal committee in Wellington 2 September 1871 lists officers and men of the colonial forces who had made application for the medal for services rendered prior to 31 December 1866, and whose claims had been admitted by the commissioners; as well as those whose claims had been rejected (with the reason); and also those officers and men included in the rolls formed by the late commissioners whose names also appear in the lists of those granted medals by the Imperial Government.CLAYTON. | Boys entering Harrow School

This First Volume of the Second Series of the Harrow School Register was edited by J. H. Stogdon and published in 1925. The boys are listed by term of entrance, and then alphabetically by surname and christian names (in bold). Next, in brackets and in italics, is the school house to which he belonged - or, H. B. indicating a day boy whose family lived in Harrow. Stogdon then gives the father's surname and initials, and address. In cases where the boy was prominent in sports at school, or won academic prizes, scholarships &c., that is given; then the year of leaving the school; and a synopsis of his career, so far as known.

| Deaths of Customs Officers

The 16th Report of the Commissioners of Her Majesty's Customs on the Customs includes a Report on the Health of the Outdoor Officers, Watermen, Messengers and other Inferior Officers of Her Majesty's Customs during 1871 by Walter Dickson, M. D., R. N., Medical Inspector. This has tables of deaths and superannuations during the year. That for deaths gives name (surname and initials); rank; age; length of service (years and months); date and cause of death.

The Royal Engineer Journal 'for circulation among the Officers of the Corps of Royal Engineers only' commenced in August 1870, the first volume containing the issues through to December 1871. 'The Handy Directory and Guide for Maidstone and the Surrounding Villages within a Circle of Six Miles' was printed and published by W. S. Vivish. This General Directory for Maidstone itself includes 'as a rule, those only who are private residents, or are engaged (as principals) in professional, mercantile, or trading pursuits'. The letters p. r., in italics, signify private residents.

| Mathematics students at Cambridge University

Tripos lists or examination results for the year, arranged by class (Wranglers, Senior Optimes and Junior Optimes), and within each class in order of score in the examination (the names of candidates with equal scores are bracketed together, with the word 'AEq.'). Each student's surname and college is given: this list was printed in 1890, and was annotated with asterisks to show which students had subsequently become fellows of the university; and with footnotes showing those who became headmasters, &c., elsewhere. Winners of Dr Smith's Mathematical Prizes are marked (1) senior, (2) for junior. The Greek letter alpha is affixed to the names of those students who had gained first class results in the Classical Tripos; beta to those entered in the second class; and gamma to those entered in the third class. These lists are particularly useful in identifying for an individual the fellow-students who will have attended lectures with him; and, where from the college, are likely to have been even more closely associated by having been under the same supervisor.
