South County Durham Poll Book: Barnard Castle District (1832)
A poll for two Knights of the Shire to represent in Parliament the Southern Division of the county palatine of Durham was taken on 21 and 22 December 1832. This poll book sets out all the electors by polling district (Barnard Castle, Bishop Auckland, Darlington, Middleton-in-Teesdale, Sedgefield, Stanhope and Stockton) and gives registered number; full name (surname first); place of abode; nature of qualification (such as House as occupier, Land as occupier, Copyhold Property, &c.); and the name of the parish, township or place where the property is situate. The votes are set out in the right-hand columns, under P. (for Joseph Pearse, jun., esq.), B. (John Bowes, esq.), and S. (Robert Duncombe Shafto, esq.), the three candidates. A voter could choose two candidates, in which case a dash is put in each of the two appropriate columns, or plump for just one - where a star is placed in that candidate's column. This was the first election after the Reform Act, which extended the franchise in the counties to all adult men possessing freehold worth 40s a year or more, or copyhold or long leasehold of £10 or more, or being tenants or short leaseholders of £50 or more.

Subscribers to the Charity Schools of St Andrew Holborn (1833)
The Charity Schools of St Andrew, Holborn, were supported by private benefactions and subscriptions. This list of the subscribers, for 1833, gives their names and addresses and the amount of their subscription. Apart from a handful of life subscribers, who had paid a substantial lump sum, the payments were annual. The lefthand column shows the year at which their subscriptions commenced. Full names are given in some cases, but often christian names are omitted or indicated only by initials. The addresses include house numbers in many instances. Those who had served the office of Steward are indicated by a dagger.

Gaoled Newspaper Vendors in Warwick House of Correction (1819-1834)
The 1815 Stamp Act increased the tax on newspapers to fourpence a copy. Many radical newspaper publishers and the booksellers and newsagents who sold their popular papers ignored the law, and were liable to suffer prosecution either by authority of the Stamp Office which regulated the tax or by a common informer. In 1836 the House of Commons ordered these returns to be made from each prison, giving details of the convictions that had been made under the Act. The returns are not entirely consistent from one gaol to another, but most give names, dates, and period of imprisonment.

Boys entering Elizabeth College, Guernsey (1834)
Elizabeth College, Guernsey, was founded in 1563 and rechartered in 1825. Charles James Durand, Kentish Brock and Edward Charles Ozanne compiled this edition of the college register, published in 1898. The names are arranged by term of entering the school, with a sequential number, surname and christian names in bold: then place and date of birth, father's name or reference to a brother previously at the school; and year of leaving. Beneath that, in smaller type, the compilers put what they could glean about the boy's subsequent career.
