In the year 1569, when the insurrections in the North caused so much alarm, and levies were raised throughout the country for the service of queen Elizabeth, the commissioners for musters in Berkshire (sir Edward Unton, knt., of Wadley, John Fettiplace of Besils Legh, high sheriff, William Forster of Aldermaston, Edmond Docura of Chamberhouse and Roger Yonge of Basildon) attended at Newbury, when this return was made of men 'able to bear arms and mete for service in the warres' (State Papers Domestic Elizabeth lxiv 5). A muster of the ablemen, gunners, light horsemen, pikemen, archers and billmen available from this hundred, compiled by sir Hugh Paulet, sir Maurice Barkeley, sir Ralph Hopton and John Horner in answer to a royal commission of the 11th year of queen Elizabeth. The returns are arranged by tithing. The hundred consisted of the parishes of Ashington, Brimpton, Chilthorne Domer, Limington, Lufton, Mudford, Preston Plucknett, and (the borough of) Yeovil. | Aliens in London (1571)
'The Reporte of the Searche of all the Straungers wythin London and Southwerk and the Liberties therof, made the xth daye of November, 1571'. The search found a total of 4,631 aliens living in the city, the great majority (3,643) being Dutch, 657 Frenchmen, 233 Italians &c. Arranged by parish and ward the report lists each householder by full name, where born, whether a denizen, (often) additional details, and how many aliens were in the household, and religion. This index includes also persons mentioned incidentally, such as employers. SP 12/82. Where there is a pair of scans for a single entry, the first gives the heading for the ward or parish.

| Aliens in St Katherine's by the Tower (1571)
'The Names and Surnames of all Straungers, denysons and others dwellyng, remayninge, and abiding within ye precinke of Sainte Katherins by ye Towre of Lonon, taken by ye Balif and ye Constables of ye same precinckt, the 19 daie of December ao 1571, and in ye 14 yeare of ye raigne of oure soueraigne Ladie Elyzabeth, by ye grace of God of Englonde, Fraunce, and Irelonde, Queene, Defender of ye Faith, etc.' This was part of a general census of the 1972 aliens living in and about London, recorded in ff. 395-432 of State Papers Domestic, Elizabeth, volume 84.

| Prisoners in the Tower of London
(1579)
Sir Owen Hopton, the Lieutenant of the Tower of London, submitted quarterly claims for the expenses of keeping the political and religious dissidents (mostly Roman Catholic recusants) in his charge - a 'keeper' at 5s a week, fuel and candles at 4s a week, and for himself 13s 4d a week, for each prisoner.
