Soldiers wounded in the Great War: Northumberland Fusiliers

Lists of names of soldiers wounded, died of wounds, died, killed, missing presumed dead, and taken prisoner by the enemy, were issued to the British national press under the title Roll of Honour. Each man is identified by surname, initials and number. The regimental returns from which the daily Roll was compiled were made up over the previous week or weeks. Each regimental return may be partial, covering only part of the alphabet. The lists are provisional, in that a man reported wounded one day may appear as died of wounds later; a missing presumed dead may later be reported as having been found, or as having died; the lists of prisoners of war were provided by the enemy and will relate to captures weeks earlier. However, these rolls are the most comprehensive single source of names of British and allied combatants meeting with misfortune in the Great War. This is the roll published 1 August 1916. | Gardeners of Country Houses in Berkshire

The Horticultural Directory and Year Book was published for 57 years by the proprietors of the Journal of Horticulture, but for 1917 it was acquired by the Gardeners' Chronicle, and a complete revision was undertaken. 'In order to ensure the accuracy of the entries, enquiries were sent to every one of the many thousand persons whose names appeared in the lists. Nor did the work cease there, for in cases where no reply was received, a second enquiry, and in some instances even a third, was sent out. Inasmuch as the War has called many gardeners from their normal avocations, it was not possible to obtain information with respect to all the changes which occurred during the year, and particularly during the closing months. It became necessary, therefore, either to go to press with a certain number of unverified entries or to omit them altogether. After careful consideration, the latter course was adopted, and every unverified entry has been omitted.'
Pages 75 to 187 of the work are occupied by 'A County Directory of the Principal Gardens in Great Britain and Ireland, including Name of Proprietor, Gardener, and Post Town.' The official register printed under the direction of the Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain pursuant to the act of 31 & 32 Victoriae, cap. 121 (An Act to Regulate the Sale of Poisons, and Alter and Amend the Pharmacy Act, 1852) comprised two sections:
1.The Register of Pharmaceutical Chemists, giving date of registration, number of examination certificate, full name (surname first, in capitals), and residence;

| Boys entering Manchester Grammar School

This Biographical Register of Old Mancunians lists boys alphabetically by year of entering the school. A bare register of entrants existed from 1888 onwards but it was only since the Second World War that any kind of detailed record was kept of those who passed through the school. So, in every case in this printed register, full name is given, in bold, surname first (in capitals); date of birth, and years attending the school; but for the earlier years sometimes there is no more information - or, equally, after investigation among Old Mancunians and published sources, the editors may have been able to furnish a condensed biography. An asterisk indicates a holder of a Foundation Scholarship. In the later years a current address is also given, as of 1964 to 1965, when the book was prepared.HUMBLE. The Medical Directory was split into several sections. The Scottish section covered all medical practitioners resident within Scotland. Each year a schedule was sent to each doctor to be returned to the publishers, so as to keep the directory up to date. In the directory the doctor's name is given first, in bold, surname first, in capitals; then current address. Next are the qualifications; the italic abbreviations in parentheses following the qualifications indicate the medical school at which they were gained. Then there is a list of posts and honours within the profession, starting with those then current; previous posts are preceded by the word 'late'. Wellington College, near Wokingham, was originally founded for the education of sons of military officers. A register of boys entering the school from First Term 1859 to Michaelmas 1933 was compiled by F. G. Lawrence for the Old Wellingtonian Society. In each entry the boy's name is given in full, in bold, surname first; age at entry (usually 11 to 14); then, in brackets, the name of the dormitory or house to which he belonged, in italics, with the years of his stay; then his father's name (usually surname and initials, but not christian name) with military decorations where appropriate. School prefects and captains are noted as such; if the boy played cricket for the school, XI with the years; academic honours, scholarships, &c.; a brief biography; and date of death, or (where known) address in 1933. | Elecutionists

The Calendar of the Trinity College of Music, London, for the year 1929 includes lists of licentiates and associates including these elecutionists. Surnames and initials are given; but women are distinguished by having their (first) christian name stated. The college provided instruction to nearly 1000 students a year, with examinations of 66,000 candidates a year at 700 local centres throughout the world. HUMBLE. | Anglican clergy

Crockford's Clerical Directory listed all Anglican clergy in the British Isles, India, the colonies, Europe, Asia and South America. The 59th annual issue, for 1930, is based on returns from all the individuals listed. The details given are: name (surname first, in capitals) in bold, prefixed by an asterisk in the case of university electors, and by a dagger whether the return had not been made, or it had been imperfectly filled up; name of theological college and/or university, and degrees, with years; a bold d followed by year and diocese signifies date of ordination as deacon and by which bishop; then a bold p, similarly for ordination as priest; posts (C: curate; I: incumbent; V; vicar; R: rector) with parishes and years; address; telephone number; and lists of books &c. where appropriate. In the case of the man then holding an English, Irish, Scottish or Welsh benefice, additional details are given - a bold P signifies the patron of the advowson; then the income, with items such as Q.
