Under the Reform Act of 1832, the County of Norfolk was allotted four Members of Parliament, being two Knights of the Shire for the Eastern Division and two for the Western. The Western Division included the hundreds of Brothercross, Clackclose, Freebridge Lynn, Freebridge Marshland, Gallow, North Greenhoe, South Greenhow, Grimshoe, Guiltcross, Holt, Launditch, Mitford, Shropham, Smithdon and Wayland. Polling in 1837 took place at Swaffham, Downham, Fakenham, Lynn Regis, Thetford and East Dereham. The franchise was available to freeholders worth 40s a year or over; copyholders and long leaseholders of £10 or more; short leaseholders and tenants of £50 or more: but limited to adult males. Voting took place on 1 and 2 August 1837. This poll book lists the voters for each parish, with the votes cast. Each voter had two votes: the votes are indicated in the columns F. (Sir William Henry Browne Folkes, 2838); A. (Sir Jacob Astley, 2713); B. (William Bagge, 3178); and C. (William Lyde Wiggett Chute, 2877). The voters were not necessarily resident in the parish, but derived their franchise from the land there; so some of the names have addresses outside the parish, not a few living in different counties. Not everyone voted, but everyone with a vote was listed in the poll book: persons who qualified for voting in two parishes (but nevertheless had just the one vote per person) are noted as such.HUMPHREY. The memoir of the life of Thomas Cranfield 'is a standing memorial of the blessed effects which result from the enlightened zeal and Christian perseverance of one man, in the cause of the dear Redeemer.' He was 'a laborious Sabbath-school Teacher; long a beloved Leader in the Southwark Sunday-school Society, and the devotedly-benevolent Visitor of the poor outcasts in the Mint and surrounding courts and alleys' on behalf of Surrey Chapel in Southwark; he was born 12 March 1758 in Southwark and died there 28 November 1838. This account of his life by his son attracted a wide subscription, particularly in London. | Boys entering Sedbergh School

B. Wilson prepared this edition of the register of the Grammar School at Sedbergh in the West Riding of Yorkshire, published in 1895. Sedbergh school had three exhibitions at St John's College, Cambridge, and for the earliest years little more could be found about the pupils at the school than was recorded at St John's or other colleges. In 1700-1706 the first material from Sedbergh appears, but no more than lists of surnames. From 1746 onwards full names, or surnames and initials, are found for those boys who did not continue to university. It is only from 1820 onwards that the school register starts to give detail: month of entry, age, birthplace, and month of leaving. From then onwards Wilson was able to add more and more biographical detail, except, of course, for those boys in 1895 still at the school or with their careers yet ahead of them.HUMPHREY.
