(1805) His Royal Highness prince Edward, born in 1767 third son of his Majesty king George III, was created Duke of Kent and Strathern and Earl of Dublin in 1799. He died in 1820: his elder brother George (Augustus Frederick) became king George IV, but died childless in 1830; the next son, William (Henry), succeeded as king William IV, but died childless in 1837: and so the Duke of Kent's only child, a daughter, princess Alexandrina Victoria, succeeded to the throne as queen Victoria.
