In fact, this listing is a little more comprehensive than the main directory, in that it includes residents of some London suburbs that, although in the county of Surrey, are not included in the Surrey directory. Each year the best soldiers of the regiment were chosen for long service and good conduct medals. This register gives rank, name, regimental number, and date of recommendation. (The sample scan is from the East Surrey regiment). The register is essentially a register of recommendations, annotated with details of the issue of the medals. Where no gratuity accompanied the medal, the entry is marked 'W. G.' (without gratuity); where, for one reason or another, the medal was not issued, the entry is marked 'N. S.' (not sanctioned) and struck through. The battalion was moved from Jamaica to Sierra Leone (with detachments at Gold Coast and Demerara) in 1880; returning to Jamaica in 1883, but with detachments at Honduras, Demerara and Nassau. In 1886 the battalion returned to Sierra Leone, with detachments at Gold Coast and Barbados; and in 1889 was sent back to Jamaica, with detachments at St Lucia, Barbados and Nassau. In 1891 the troops were sent to the west coast of Africa; being established at Sierra Leone in 1892, and taking part in the Gambia Expedition. The battalion returned to Jamaica in 1895; was sent back to Sierra Leone in 1898; and went to Bermuda in 1899.MAYERS. Cost: £8.00. | Sample scan, click to enlarge

Where no gratuity accompanied the medal, the entry is marked 'W. G.' (without gratuity); where, for one reason or another, the medal was not issued, the entry is marked 'N. S.' (not sanctioned) and struck through. The regiment was based on the 6th Regimental District - Warwick. The 1st battalion returned from Bengal in 1880, and in 1885 was based at Plymouth, and in 1895 at Chatham. The 2nd battalion embarked for Bengal in 1878, and by 1885 was established at Fort William; it was moved to Ceylon in 1892, returning to England in 1896. | Ordinary Members of the Institute of Bankers

The Journal of the Institute of Bankers for 1904 includes a list of Fellows (from which this scan is taken: an asterisk indicates a Life Fellow), of Associates (an asterisk indicates a Life Associate, and a dagger a holder of the certificate of the institute), and of Ordinary Members; there are also results of the institute's final examinations held from 11 to 13 April, in which the successful candidates are listed alphabetically by surname and full christian name(s), with the name and address of their bank (not their personal addresses). These final examinations entitled the successful candidates to the Certificate of the Institute of Bankers; those who obtained distinctions are so indicated in the lists (an asterisk for Commercial Law, dagger for Arithmetic and Algebra, double dagger for Practical Banking, double s for Commercial Geography and History, and double vertical line for Political Economy). There was also an examination taken after the Gilbart Lectures, with successful candidates being awarded money prizes, or certificates of distinction, or honour, or merit, and similar lists of these awards were also printed in the journal.MAYERS. The alphabetical list of all living members of Durham University, issued in 1910, was compiled from the Admission Book and University Register. It gives surname, initials, degree, college, and date. Those marked with an asterisk were Members of Convocation. In the case of graduates in Arts, Theology (except in the case of Bachelors of Divinity) and Civil Law, the dates refer to the year in which the examination for the degree of B.A. was passed; in the case of Bachelors of Divinity who were not Graduates in Arts, of Licentiates in Theology, of Civil Engineers, and of Licentiates in Medicine, to the year in which each passed the Final Examination. In the case of Hygiene, Science, and Music, to the year in which the Examination for B.Hy., B.Sc., or B.Mus. was passed; and in the case of Graduates in Medicine to the year in which the Examination for the degree of M.B. was passed, except in the case of practitioners, when the date refers to the year in which the examination for the degree specified was passed. In cases where no date is given the degree is Ad Eundem, unless it is marked honorary. The abbreviations are: Arms., Armstrong College, Newcastle-upon-Tyne; Codr., Codrington College, Barbados; Cos., Bishop Cosin's Hall; F. The Home Office issued monthly lists of aliens to whom Certificates of Naturalization or Readmission to British Nationality had been granted by the Secretary of State and whose oaths of allegiance had been registered in the Home Office. These notices, from January to December 1916, refer to naturalizations from December 1915 to November 1916. The lists give full name, surname first; country of origin; date of taking the oath of allegiance; place of residence; and occupation. An dagger indicates re-admission to British nationality.MAYERS. | Soldiers wounded in the Great War: East Lancashire Regiment

Lists of names of soldiers wounded, died of wounds, died, killed, missing presumed dead, and taken prisoner by the enemy, were issued to the British national press under the title Roll of Honour. Each man is identified by surname, initials and number. The regimental returns from which the daily Roll was compiled were made up over the previous week or weeks. Each regimental return may be partial, covering only part of the alphabet. The lists are provisional, in that a man reported wounded one day may appear as died of wounds later; a missing presumed dead may later be reported as having been found, or as having died; the lists of prisoners of war were provided by the enemy and will relate to captures weeks earlier. However, these rolls are the most comprehensive single source of names of British and allied combatants meeting with misfortune in the Great War. This is the roll published 1 August 1916.
