| Soldiers wounded: Manchester Regiment

Lists of names of soldiers wounded, died of wounds, died, missing presumed dead, and taken prisoner by the enemy, were issued to the British national press under the title Roll of Honour. Each man is identified by surname, initials and number. The regimental returns from which the daily Roll was compiled were made up over the previous week or weeks. Each regimental return may be partial, covering only part of the alphabet. The lists are provisional, in that a man reported wounded one day may appear as died of wounds later; a missing presumed dead may later be reported as having been found, or as having died; the lists of prisoners of war were provided by the enemy and will relate to captures weeks earlier. However, these rolls are the most comprehensive single source of names of British and allied combatants meeting with misfortune in the Great War. This is the roll published 2 August 1916. SILCOCK. | Gardeners of Country Houses in Hampshire

The Horticultural Directory and Year Book was published for 57 years by the proprietors of the Journal of Horticulture, but for 1917 it was acquired by the Gardeners' Chronicle, and a complete revision was undertaken. 'In order to ensure the accuracy of the entries, enquiries were sent to every one of the many thousand persons whose names appeared in the lists. Nor did the work cease there, for in cases where no reply was received, a second enquiry, and in some instances even a third, was sent out. Inasmuch as the War has called many gardeners from their normal avocations, it was not possible to obtain information with respect to all the changes which occurred during the year, and particularly during the closing months. It became necessary, therefore, either to go to press with a certain number of unverified entries or to omit them altogether. After careful consideration, the latter course was adopted, and every unverified entry has been omitted.'
Pages 75 to 187 of the work are occupied by 'A County Directory of the Principal Gardens in Great Britain and Ireland, including Name of Proprietor, Gardener, and Post Town.' | Roll of Honour: London Sewerage and Drainage Staff
(1914-1918)
The London County Council published a 'Record of Service in the Great War 1914-1918 by Members of the Council's Staff' in 1922. This included a complete list, department by department, of the over 7000 staff who had served in the armed forces during the war, those dying while on active service being marked with an asterisk. The entries give full name, surname first, in bold, the years in uniform, any decorations, rank, and a brief description of theatre in which engaged. SILCOCK. 1.The Register of Pharmaceutical Chemists, giving date of registration, number of examination certificate, full name (surname first, in capitals), and residence;

The Roll of Honour for the firm lists the men who joined his Majesty's forces, giving for each his surname and initials, and, for officers only, regiment. The names are arranged according to works - Witton Works in Birmingham, Central Stores in Birmingham, Ileene Works in Birmingham, Carbon Works in Birmingham, Steel Conduit Works at Witton, High Street in Birmingham, Head Office on Queen Victoria Street in London, Union Street Works in London, and from the departments in Aberdeen, (Queen Street) Belfast, (Victoria Street) Bristol, (Womanby Street) Cardiff, (Waterloo Street) Glasgow, Hull, (Wellington Street) Leeds, Leamington, (Church Alley) Liverpool, (Victoria Bridge) Manchester, (Gallowgate) Newcastle-on-Tyne, (Chapel Bar) Nottingham, and the Osram-Robertson Lamp Works in Hammersmith, the Peel-Connor Telephone Works in Manchester, Salford Electrical Instruments Ltd in Manchester, (Angel Street) Sheffield, (High Street) Southampton, (Wind Street) Swansea, and from Australia, Calcutta, Capetown, Brussels, Paris, Johannesburg, Buenos Aires and Spain.

| Boot and Shoe Makers Out of Work: Leicester (1920)
The Monthly Report of the National Union of Boot and Shoe Operatives gave details of Out of Work Benefit paid to members. The table is arranged by district, and gives each member's register number, name (surname with initial), time off work (weeks and days), and total pay (at 2s 6d a day). 26 January 1920

The alphabetical list of officers on the Active List of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines (RM) and of the Retired and Emergency Officers serving gives: number of ship or where otherwise serving; name (surname, first christian name and initials); rank; and the dates of their seniority. This is the list from the March 1920 edition of the Navy List, corrected to 18 February 1920.

The monthly report of the United Society of Boiler Makers and Iron and Steel Shipbuilders contains, as well as internal union business, reports of meetings; obituaries; warnings about named individuals falling into arrears, or becoming 'out of benefit'; members 'run out'; subscription sales; new members admitted; second class transferred to first class membership; apprentices admitted; apprentices transferred to adult membership; and 'unapproved' apprentices. Members are normally identified by surname and initial, with membership number as appropriate. These abbreviations also occur: 1st, first class; 2nd, second class; 3rd, third class; A.I.S., angle iron smith; App., apprentice; A.W., acetylene worker; C., caulker; D., driller; H-up, holder-up; P., plater; R., riveter; S.I.W., sheet iron worker.
