Officers of the British Army on Foreign Half-Pay (1840) The New Annual Army List, corrected to 7 February 1840, was published in London by Lieut. H. G. Hart. The section entitled 'Officers on the Retired Full Pay and Half Pay' lists all such officers, by rank from captain down to ensign, with paymasters, adjutants, quarter-masters, medical staff and chaplains. (Officers above the rank of captain were retained in the main list of Field Officers). These lists are annotated with dates of successive ranks, when placed on half-pay, and the name of the regiment, &c., and with symbols indicating the officers present at Trafalgar (T), in the Peninsula or the South of France (P), and Waterloo (W). Names of officers on retired full-pay are given in italics. The list covers not only the regiments of the line, but also the Royal Artillery, Royal Engineers, Royal Marines, Staff, and Military Departments. SYMMERS. Cost: £4.00.	Sample scan, click to enlarge
Masters and Mates of Merchantmen: Certificates of Competency (1857) The Mercantile Navy List and Annual Appendage to the Commercial Code of Signals for All Nations, edited by J. H. Brown, was published By Authority in 1857. It includes this full list of 'Masters and Mates who have passed their examination and obtained Certificates of Competency', from number 1 to number 15816, except for those whose certificates had been cancelled. The first column gives the number of certificate; the second column full name, surname first (an asterisk before the name denotes those who are found qualified to act in fore and aft-rigged vessels only; two vertical lines denotes in North Wales fishery only; a double dagger, passed the examination in steam; and a dagger refers to honorary testimonials, details of which are printed at the end of the section. A B C D are the distinguishing letters for the four classes of Meteorological Observers); third column, class examined (1 ex, 1, 2 and 3 denote First Extra, First, Second and Third Class Master's Certificate, granted under the Voluntary Examination, by Order in Council dated August 1845; Ex C, Master Extra; O C, Master Ordinary; 1 M, First Mate; O M, Only Mate; 2 M, Second Mate; L. R. N., Lieutenant Royal Navy; M. R. N., Master Royal Navy; E. I. C., East India Company; M. I. N., Master Indian Navy.); fourth column, year of certificate (where there are two dots, this is to represent a 'ditto' to the year next above); fifth column, Examining Board (Aberdeen, Belfast, Bristol, Cork, Dublin, Dundee, Glasgow, Greenock, Hull, Leith, Liverpool, London, Newcastle, Plymouth, Shields or Sunderland). Scots Guards fighting in Egypt (1882) The war medal roll for the Egyptian campaign of 1882 is annotated to show those men actually present at Tel-el-Kebir, and thereby also entitled to the Tel-el-Kebir clasp. In addition, there follows an almost duplicate roll of men entitled to the Bronze Star granted by the Khedive of Egypt in recognition of the campaign. The 1st battalion, The Scots Guards, took part in the 1882 campaign, including the battle of Tel-el-Kebir, and added Egypt, 1882 and Tel-el-Kebir to the regimental honours. Medical Practitioners in Ireland (1926) The Medical Directory was split into several sections. The Irish section covered all medical practitioners resident within the whole of the island of Ireland. Each year a schedule was sent to each doctor to be returned to the publishers, so as to keep the directory up to date. In the directory the doctor's name is given first, in bold, surname first, in capitals; then current address. Next are the qualifications; the italic abbreviations in parentheses following the qualifications indicate the medical school at which they were gained. Then there is a list of posts and honours within the profession, starting with those then current; previous posts are preceded by the word 'late'. Residents of Aberdeen: Belvidere Street (1939) The street directory gives full names (christian and surname, or initials and surname) street by street and house by house (house name or number), specifying where the street starts, and where and on which side of the road each house stood. In the case of longer streets the position of an individual house can be located because the names of intersecting streets are given in italics, and fixed points such as post offices and churches are also indicated. Metropolitan-Vickers Ex-Apprentices and Ex-Trainees (1950) The third edition of 'A Register of Ex-Apprentices and Ex-Trainees of the Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Company Limited' was published in 1950. It contains 10,219 names of those who had been trained at Trafford Park, Manchester, between 1902 and the end of 1949. The compilation was based on the second edition (published in 1939) augmented by the answers to questionnaires, responded to by 74% of those included. Addresses for another 12% were updated. The entries are arranged alphabetically by surname (in capitals and bold) and forename. Then the period at Vickers (e. g., 46-48 for 1946 to 1948); year of birth; then highest career level within the company; and if removed to another company, the name of that (in bold) with year of joining. There are sections for any scholarship, war service, and present address, as of 1950. Names of the deceased are printed in italics. In bold on the left hand side of each entry there is one or more of these abbreviations: C, College Apprentice; E, Special Trainee; k, Killed on Active Service, O. H. M. S.; Ls, Member, M-V. Long Service Association; o, Member, M-V. Overseas Association; P, Probationary College Apprentice; S, School Apprentice; Sp, Special Apprentice; T, Trade Apprentice; V, Vacation Apprentice; w, Member ex-British Westinghouse Association; and *, Present member of the M-V. Ex-Apprentices of British Thomson-Houston Company (1951) In 1938 the British Thomson-Houson Co Ltd of Rugby first published a 'record of those who embarked upon careers in the Engineering Industry by way of the British Thomson-Houston Company's Training Scheme': this enlarged edition was issued in September 1951, based on data verified up to December 1948, with subsequent corrections up to the time of printing. The company had been training apprentices since 1899. The names of the deceased were printed in italics: the most vestigial entries in the volume simply give full name, and the years of apprenticeship; but most entries are much more comprehensive. The symbol 'w' indicates killed by enemy action. In the first column full name is given in bold, surname first (in capitals), and then any title, decorations, academic qualifications in italics. Beneath that is current address (as of 1951); and then (to the left) year of birth, and (to the right) nature of course followed and years (e. g. 30-32 for 1930 to 1932) of commencement and completion. The abbreviations for the courses are: C, Craft Apprentice; Ch, Chemist Apprentice; Cl, Clerical Apprentice; D, Drawing Office Apprentice; E, Engineering Student Apprentice (Engineering Apprentice up to 1947); G, Graduate Apprentice (Student Apprentice up to 1947); (s), Special Course; T, Testers' Course; V, Vacation Student; W. O., Works Office Apprentice. The second column gives particulars of academic training, war service, and miscellaneous information.
