Wesleyan Ministers

The Wesleyan Methodist church in England and Ireland held annual conferences, abbreviated minutes of which were printed in the Wesleyan Methodist Magazine of September and October each year. These minutes include a complete list of the stations of the ministers for the coming year, with the names of the preachers 'on trial' and supernumeraries, arranged by district. Art School Teachers

The Science and Art Department of the Committee of Council on Education produced this list of persons certificated as competent to act as teachers of art schools, revised to March 1868. The list gives name (surname first); school where previously taught; and certificates obtained (1 elementary drawing and colouring; 2 painting; 3 the figure drawn and painted; 4 modelling ornament; 5 modelling the figure; 6a mechanical drawing; 6b architectural drawing).TAYLOR. Boys entering Epsom College

The Royal Medical Benevolent College at Epsom in Surrey was founded in 1853 for the orphans of the medical profession, and evolved to become a public school still largely catering for sons of doctors and surgeons. In 1955 this register of pupils, from 1855 to 1954, edited by T. R. Thomson, was published. The sample scan is from 1880. The entries are arranged alphabetically by surname under year of entrance to the school; surname first (in bold), christian names, and then (in most cases), the father's name, occupation and address: then the boy's year of birth (b.), year of leaving (l.), occupation, and, where known, year of death (d.) Boys entering Harrow School

This First Volume of the Second Series of the Harrow School Register was edited by J. H. Stogdon and published in 1925. The boys are listed by term of entrance, and then alphabetically by surname and christian names (in bold). Next, in brackets and in italics, is the school house to which he belonged - or, H. B. indicating a day boy whose family lived in Harrow. Stogdon then gives the father's surname and initials, and address. In cases where the boy was prominent in sports at school, or won academic prizes, scholarships &c., that is given; then the year of leaving the school; and a synopsis of his career, so far as known.

Boys entering Leeds Grammar School

The admission books for Leeds Grammar School from 1820 to 1900 were edited by Edmund Wilson and published in 1906. The series of registers is almost complete for the period, there being in addition admission registers for the Lower (or Commercial) Department from 1856 to 1865, and lists of boys in the school in 1856, and in the Commercial Department in 1861. The entries are arranged by date or term of admission: a sequential number is given first, then surname, christian name, and, after a dash, father's christian name, occupation, and address; another dash, and then the age of the boy at admission, and often his year of leaving (with the abbreviation r. for 'removed' or 'left'). r.* means left without notice; (o) or S. or Stranger or Foreigner indicates a boy not on the foundation. The editor was unable to divine the meaning of the abbreviation (Q) or the asterisks prefixed to most entries in 1856 to 1860, but dutifully copies them into the text. Classics students at Cambridge University

Tripos lists or examination results for the year, arranged by class (First, Second and Third), and within each class in order of score in the examination (students getting exactly equal marks are bracketed together). Each student's surname and college is given: this list was printed in 1890, and was annotated with asterisks to show which students had subsequently become fellows of the university; and with footnotes showing those who became headmasters, &c., elsewhere. In each year two students were singled out for the Chancellor's Medals, and these are marked, (A) for senior, (B) for junior (or with a paragraph mark if adjudged of equal merit). These lists are particularly useful in identifying for an individual the fellow-students who will have attended lectures with him; and, where from the college, are likely to have been even more closely associated by having been under the same supervisor. Dublin University Electors
(1868)
The roll of all persons entitled to vote at elections for members to serve in Parliament for the University of Dublin lists living graduates of the university, arranged alphabetically by surname and christian name(s), with current residence, dates at which their degrees were conferred - Vern. denoting the Spring, Aest. the Summer, and Hiem. the Winter Commencements - and date of registration. Members of the Senate and electors on the books of Trinity College are distinguished by a dagger. Where an elector's name is given in italics, he was no longer known at the residence given.TAYLOR. A poll for the election of two knights of the shire to represent South Warwickshire was held 24 November 1868: the candidates were Lord Hyde (H.), Sir R. N. C. Hamilton (H.), H. C. Wise, Esq. (W.) and John Hardy, Esq. (H.). This poll book lists all those electors who voted; the county franchise included not only male freeholders of 40s a year, but also £10 copyholders and long-leaseholders, and £50 short-leaseholders and tenants. Where no vote was cast the elector's number and name are given, the name in italics. The names are arranged by polling district and then by parish or township. Freeholders holding requisite property in a district are listed there, but might well reside elsewhere. The right-hand column indicates how each man voted. TAYLOR.
