The poll of the freeholders of Berkshire on an election of two representatives in Parliament, taken at Abingdon on Monday 12 October 1812 and fourteen following days. The candidates were Charles Dundas esquire (D: 1717 votes), the Hon. Richard Neville (N: 1374), and William Hallett esquire (H: 525). This poll book sets out the names of the voters in alphabetical order parish by parish. After the name of the parish or township, the name of the hundred in which it lay is given in italics. The freeholders' full names are stated, surname first, and the place of their abode (often elsewhere). The right hand column records their votes. | Plaintiffs in Chancery
(1826-1827)
James Russell, barrister-at-law, prepared reports of cases argued and determined in the High Court of Chancery during the time of Lord Chancellor Eldon. This is the volume for the 7th and 8th years of the reign of king George IV. Russell normally sets out for each case a narrative of the evidence presented to the court; then the arguments of the counsel for both sides, usually with reference to legal precedents; and then the judgment, in detail. The evidence in these cases is often extensive, and of historical and genealogical interest; the incidents leading up to the suits usually took place in the preceding ten years or so, but in some cases the narrative stretches back much further, even to the 16th century.WELLMAN. |  British merchant seamen
(1835-1836)
At this period, the foreign trade of ships plying to and from the British isles involved about 150,000 men on 15,000 ships; and the coasting trade about a quarter as many more. A large proportion of the seamen on these ships were British subjects, and so liable to be pressed for service in the Royal Navy; but there was no general register by which to identify them, so in 1835 parliament passed a Merchant Seamen's Registration Bill. Under this act this large register of British seamen was compiled, based on ships' crew lists gathered in British and Irish ports, and passed up to the registry in London. Each seaman was assigned a number, and the names were arranged in the register by first two letters of the surname (our sample scan shows one of the pages for 'Sm'); in addition, an attempt was made to separate out namesakes by giving the first instance of a name (a), the second (b), and so on. But no effective method was devised to prevent the same man being registered twice as he appeared in a second crew list; moreover, the original crew lists were clearly difficult for the registry clerks to copy, and some of the surname spellings appear to be corrupted. A parliamentary committee decided that the system devised did not answer the original problem, and this register was abandoned after less than two years: but it is an apparently comprehensive source for British merchant seamen in 1835 to 1836. The register records the number assigned to each man; his name; age; birthplace; quality (master, captain, mate, 2nd mate, mariner, seaman, fisherman, cook, carpenter, boy &c.); and the name and home port of his ship, with the date of the crew list (usually at the end of a voyage). Most of the men recorded were born in the British Isles, but not all (for instance, Charleston and Stockholm appear in the sample scan). The final column 'How disposed of' is rarely used, and indicates those instances where a man died, was discharged, or deserted his ship during the voyage.WELLMAN. A poll was taken 26 July 1837 for the election of two members to represent the City of Westminster in Parliament. The candidates were Lieut.-Col. de Lacey Evans, John Temple Leader, and Gen. the Right Hon. sir George Murray, K. G. C. This poll book lists the electors with full name (surname first) and address (in italics), dashes indicating for whom they cast their votes. The names are listed alphabetically by first letter of surname, arranged in the eight parishes of Westminster, plus the extra-parochial Precincts of the Savoy.WELLMAN. The Royal Kalendar lists general and field officers of the British Army - five Field Marshals, 95 generals, 138 major-generals, 310 colonels, 637 lieutenant-colonels, 697 majors, in order of precedence according to year of precedence, and with the regiment indicated for each; then there are aides-de-camp to her Majesty queen Victoria; retired officers specially allowed to retain their ranks; and then the queen's land forces, set out regiment by regiment and battalion by battalion, naming the colonel, lieutenant-colonel and major for each, officers of the British garrisons, and of the Tower of London; and the officers of the Royal Regiment of Artillery (including the Field Train) and the Corps of Royal Engineers, by rank.WELLMAN. Perry's Bankrupt and Insolvent Gazette, issued monthly, included lists of dissolutions of partnerships gazetted in England and Wales. The names of the partners are given in full, surnames in capitals, followed by trade and address, and date of the end of the partnership. Each entry usually ends with the phrase 'Debts by ...', indicating which partner intended to continue, and resume the responsibilities of, the business.
