Bengal Civil Servants: Second Class

The East India Register and Army List was compiled, by permission of the East India Company, from the official returns received at the East India House. The list of civil servants in Bengal presidency is arranged by class of rank, and then by seniority of appointment. The season of appointment is given on the left, then name (usually in the form christian name, initials for middle names, surname) and current position, or if on furlough - except in the case of the appointees of the season of 1856 in the sixth class, where no position is stated, and christian names are given only as initials.WILSON. Boys entering Leeds Grammar School Lower (Commercial) Department

The admission books for Leeds Grammar School from 1820 to 1900 were edited by Edmund Wilson and published in 1906. The series of registers is almost complete for the period, there being in addition admission registers for the Lower (or Commercial) Department from 1856 to 1865, and lists of boys in the school in 1856, and in the Commercial Department in 1861. The entries are arranged by date or term of admission: a sequential number is given first, then surname, christian name, and, after a dash, father's christian name, occupation, and address; another dash, and then the age of the boy at admission, and often his year of leaving (with the abbreviation r. for 'removed' or 'left'). r.* means left without notice; (o) or S. or Stranger or Foreigner indicates a boy not on the foundation. The editor was unable to divine the meaning of the abbreviation (Q) or the asterisks prefixed to most entries in 1856 to 1860, but dutifully copies them into the text. British Consuls, Vice-Consuls and Consular Agents to Brazil

The Mercantile Navy List and Annual Appendage to the Commercial Code of Signals for All Nations, edited by J. H. Brown, was published By Authority in 1857. It includes a list of her Majesty's Consuls Abroad and of Salaried Vice-Consuls; and a list of Unpaid British Vice-Consuls and Consular Agents. Both lists are arranged by country, and within that by residence (superintending consulates are printed with an asterisk before them); persons whose names are given in italics are only consular agents. Casualties by Death in the Armies of India: Bengal

Each issue of Allen's Indian Mail carried summary lists of 'Casualties by Death in the Armies of India reported since our last Publication', divided into the Bengal, Madras and Bombay presidencies, and Her Majesty's Forces in the East. Most of the deaths reported took place in India, but there are some from England, and among British troops campaigning in Persia and China, and elsewhere.
