Masters of Merchantmen at Mobile, Alabama (1841) The custom house at Mobile, Alabama, issued daily reports of the arrivals and clearing of merchantmen. The lists give the type and name of vessel, surname of master, whence arrived or whither departed, and the name of the shipper. Most of the trade was with American ports and Britain. These abbreviations are commonly used: Ar, arrived; Br, British; fm, from; Schr, schooner. May 1841

(1843) The Indian Mail, 'A Monthly Register for British & Foreign India, China, & Australasia' commenced publication 9 May 1843 as a continuation of the digest of Eastern intelligence that thitherto had formed a part of the Asiatic Journal. The Register section contained notices of births, marriages and deaths from the presidencies of Calcutta (extending across northern India, and into Burma), Madras, and Bombay (including Aden), as well as Australasia, Ceylon, China, Cape of Good Hope, Mauritius, and Singapore.

(1845) The Chinese Repository for 1845 contains this alphabetical list of foreign residents in China, giving name (surname and christian name or initials) sometimes with the addition '& fam[ily]', and italic abbreviations showing nationality (such as br for British, por for Portuguese, &c.), and where resident - a for Amoy, c for Canton, f for Fuchau, h for Hongkong, m for Macao, n for Ningpo, or s for Shanghai. ab means absent, and 'in several instances the place of residence cannot be determined'.WINSLOW. (1845) £21,386,703 6s 4d was promised by about 10,000 subscribers of less than £2,000 per contract to the nearly 200 railway bills deposited in the Private Bill Office during the Session of Parliament for 1845. | Medical Practitioners supporting Temperance
(1849) 'Temperance and Teetotalism: An Inquiry into the Effects of Alcoholic Drinks on the Human System in Health and Disease' by William B. Carpenter, M. D., F. R. S., F. G. S., Examiner in Physiology in the University of London, and Lecturer on Physiology at the London Hospital, was published in 1849 in Glasgow. Over 2000 medical practitioners subscribed to this statement:
'We, the undersigned, are of opinion -
1. That a very large proportion of human misery, including poverty, disease, and crime, is induced by the use of alcoholic or fermented liquors as beverages.
2. That the most perfect health is compatible with total abstinence from all such intoxicating beverages, whether in the form of ardent spirits, or as wine, beer, ale, porter, cider, etc., etc.
3. That persons accustomed to such drinks may, with perfect safety, discontinue them entirely, either at once, or gradually after a short time.
4. That total and universal abstinence from alcoholic beverages of all sorts would greatly contribute to the health, the prosperity, the morality, and the happiness of the human race.'
